Latin Roots

Our Vision

A Latino community that combines education and its cultural heritage, its ‘Latin roots,’ in productive and creative ways to contribute to, integrate with, and lead all levels of society.

Our Mission

Latin Roots will begin its mission by focusing on the education of Latino children, because a well-educated Latino community is the foundation for progress. Latin Roots will achieve its overall vision through strong support of Latino education, leadership development, understanding of Latin American culture and the Spanish language. Latin roots will focus on communities in Massachusetts and New England.

Latin Roots Objectives

There is an urgent need to support Latino students across the United States as they are falling dangerously behind in scholastic achievement. At a time when the total population of Latinos in the United States is rapidly increasing, nearly one in three Latino students is classified as a dropout, 30 per cent leave school without a high school diploma or an alternative certificate. Being Latinos the fastest growing ethnic group in the United States it is the less likely to enroll in college of all.

Latin Roots is working to improve the performance of Latino Students in Massachusetts by implementing programs that have proven successful around the country, tailored to the needs of each community. Some of these programs include tutoring, mentoring and teacher training in several academic subjects and cultural issues. Others include preparing high school students in some of the requirement to enter college such as standardized tests like SAT and ACT. Overall our programs seek to strengthen both the academic performance and the understanding of Latino students’ cultural heritage in order to help them integrate the best of both cultures.

Since 2003 we have been advancing cultural afterschool and summer programs in Lowell directed to middle school students. Currently we are preparing a new academic program for junior high school students of the same community.

How you can help

Latin Roots is trying to end a cycle of neglect. We need your support and commitment to establish some of these programs in highly populated Hispanic communities. We hope you will help us and support our students in one or more of the following ways:

* By making a tax deductive contribution to Latin Roots.
* By sponsoring a child in one of our programs (A contribution of $300 will help a high school Hispanic student improve his/her chances of going to college or and participate in different career orientation seminars in some of the best colleges in the area.)
* By giving your time as a mentor, role model or parent contributor.
* By donating school supplies, computers, books etc.
