ENGLISH VERSION BELOW




Este mes de marzo, es el mes del Censo en Los Estados Unidos. El Censo se lleva a cabo cada 10 años y es muy importante que todos participemos. Si vives en los Estados Unidos muy pronto recibirás en el correo una forma con sólo 10 preguntas. Después de llenarla, por favor mándala de vuelta en el sobre con porte pagado que acompaña a la forma, antes del 1o. de Abril, ¡es así de simple! Después de esta fecha, si no has mandado tu questionario, un Censista será asignado para visitar tu domicilio y recabar la información requerida en persona, lo cual tomará parte de tu tiempo. Tu identidad y la información que brindes están protegidas por las leyes federales (U.S. Code Title 13).

Puedes visitar esta página, y descargar el formulario de preguntas en Español para que te familiarices con ellas en caso de recibir el formulario en Inglés. En algunas partes del país con gran densidad de hispanohablantes se mandarán formularios bilingües, pero no es en todos los casos.

Estoy participando en una campaña con Global Influence y las Oficinas del Censo para pasar la voz sobre incluir cada niño en el censo, de manera tal que puedan recibir los servicios que necesiten en el futuro. Considera esta información:

“Desde el primer Censo en 1790, siempre ha habido un conteo bajo de los niños. Las comunidades locales requieren de los datos que el censo provee para planear por escuelas, cuidado de niños, y otros servicios importantes. Niños y bebés necesitan ser contados hoy, para poder recibir beneficios en el futuro.

A diferencia de los adultos, quienes cargan con la responsabilidad de asegurarse que sean contados, los niños dependen de otros para serlo. Aún así, en los Censos de 1980, 1990, y 2000, la información obtenida muestra que niños, especialmente los mas pequeños, es uno de los grupos con mayor incidencia de bajo conteo. De hecho en el Censo del 2000 mas de 1 millón de niños menores de 10 años, no fueron contados.” (Fuente: Oficinas del Censo)

El Censo se lleva a cabo, una vez cada 10 años. Así que cuando recibas tu forma asegúrate que todos los niños dependientes de ti (no importa cual sea su edad) sean contados!

March is Census month in the United States. The Census comes once every 10 years and it’s very important we all participate. You will receive a form in the mail with just 10 questions, after you fill it out, please send it back in the self addressed envelope that comes with the form before April 1st. It’s that simple. After this date, if you haven’t returned the form, a Census taker will need to be assigned to visit your house to ask the questions in person, which takes more of your time and taxpayer money. The information you provide is confidential and protected by Title 13 of the U.S. Code.

I’m participating with Global Influence and the 2010 Census in this campaign to spread the word about including every child so they can receive the services they will need in the future. Consider this:

“Children have been undercounted in every census since the first one in 1790. Local communities rely on census information in planning for schools, child care, health and other critical services. Babies need to be counted today, so they can benefit tomorrow from community services.

Unlike adults, who may bear some responsibility for making sure they are counted, children are dependent on others to make sure they are included. Yet in 1980, 1990, and 2000, Census Bureau data show children, particularly young children, are one of the groups most likely to be missed in the Census. In fact, the 2000 Census had a net undercount of more than 1 million children under age 10.” (Source: Census Office)

The Census only comes around once every ten years. So when you receive your form, make sure your dependent children (no matter how old) are counted, too!

ENGLISH VERSION BELOW

A mi me encantan las telenovelas, crecí en México viéndolas con mi mamá, o mi abuelita, o con mi prima cuando vivimos juntas en la Universidad. Recuerdo muy bien las noches que mi prima y yo compartimos viendo “Cadenas de Amargura” y “Corazón Salvaje,” (¿te acuerdas Ana?, estoy segura que está leyendo esto). Y que decir de “Café con Aroma de Mujer”, la telenovela colombiana que yo considero una de las mejores en la televisión.

Cuando ví por primera vez una telenovela en Estados Unidos, me dije, que es esto?!?!?!?!?!?! Hace cuatro años hice el intento dee ver una de ellas, pero son muy lentas para mí, y es que acá en los Estados Unidos las telenovelas (soap operas como les llaman) nunca terminan, ¡nunca! créanme, son como 6 y han estado en la televisión por años y años y años. A mí me gustan las telenovelas latinoamericanas porque son historias que empiezan y terminan. Asi que cuando una historia está completa, ya estoy lista para la próxima. ¿Mencioné acaso que me encantan las telenovelas ?

Afortunadamente para mí, las televisoras en español en este país tienen muchas de ellas. Desafortunadamente, no puedo sentarme a verlas todos los días (mama=siempre ocupada) y si me pierdo un episodio, pues me pierdo de mucho.

Por eso me da mucho gusto decirte que ahora podemos encontrar telenovelas en DVD! ¿no es fantástico? asi las puedo ver a mi propio paso. Espero que a ti te gusten también, ya que pretendo compartirte cada vez que sepa de las últimas en el mercado.

Hoy empezaré con un par de ellas “Soñadoras” y “Y ahora ¿Qué hago?”

“Soñadoras” es una telenovela que vi hace algunos años y me encantó. Cuenta las aventuras de cuatro colegialas, quienes comparten todo lo que pasa en sus vidas: amor, desamor, venganza, miedos, problemas, éxitos… Cada una de ellas es diferente, Lucía es una chica poco atractiva, tímida, y millonaria, quien es objeto de las constantes burlas de sus compañeros. Julieta, quien se siente avergonzada por tener una vida humilde, vive de las apariencias y mentiras. Jaqueline una hermosa chica, llena de lujos, super consentida. Emilia una chica tierna y dulce que quiere ser bailarina pero que tiene muchos problemas con su mamá. Estas cuatro chicas con sus personalidades tan distintas traen toda una serie de aventuras, conflictos y misterios.

“Soñadoras” es un DVD en español con una duración de más de 14 horas de diversión ininterrumpida y está a la venta ¡ya!. Espero que disfrutes del video.

“Y Ahora ¿Qué Hago?” Una comiquísima serie donde se muestra el Adal Ramones de carne y hueso, quien tiene que aprender a vivir como figura pública y como padre de familia. Con innumerables y comicas situaciones, Y Ahora ¿Qué Hago? presenta la vida detrás de cámaras de la estrella de televisión mexicana, y muestra que la fama no sólo consiste en tener lujos y saber disfrutarlos, sino en salir adelante todos los días con una buena actitud.

“Y ahora ¿Qué hago?” tiene una duración de 286 minutos de diversión ininterrumpida, es completamente en español y esta a la venta ya. ¡Disfruta el video!

I love, love, love telenovelas. Did I mention I love telenovelas? I grew up in Mexico watching them with my mom, or my grandma, or with my cousin when we were in college. I specially remember watching “Corazon Salvaje” and “Cadenas de Amargura” (remember cousin Ana?… I’m sure she is reading and not to mention the Colombian telenovela “Cafe con Aroma de Mujer,” which I think is one of the best!

When I was introduced to soap operas in the USA I thought, what is that?!?!?!?! I remember watching one of them four years ago and it was way to slow for me. I love telenovelas because they end eventually, they have closure to put it in modern parlance. So when one finishes, then it’s time to move on to the next one, fun!

Fortunately, Spanish TV stations in the USA have plenty of them. Unfortunately, I can’t watch them every day, too busy, and you know you can miss a lot if you don’t sit in front of the tv every day.(I guess that’s why the English ones are so slow.)

But now, you can get telenovelas on DVD! ...so you can watch them at your convenience, isn’t that cool? So I will be sharing with you the newest telenovelas on DVD as they are available, ok?

I will start with a couple, “Soñadoras” ("Dreamers") and “Y ahora que hago?” ("And now, what should I do?") Here is the info:

I watched “Soñadoras” when I lived in Mexico and I really like it! This is a story about four high school friends who share pretty much everything that happens in their lives: love, lies, fears, relationships, eating problems… Each comes from a different background, Lucia, a very rich, shy, and sweet girl, who is bullied because she is very naive and not very attractive. Julieta who comes from a very poor family and lies about her background to be accepted. Jaqueline a beautiful girl, very rich, and very spoiled. And Emilia who dreams about being a ballerina while she struggles with a very hard life at home. These four girls and the diversity of their personalities bring lots of adventures, conflicts, and mysteries to their lives.

“Soñadoras” is in Spanish with more than 14 hours of entertainment and is available right now.

“Y Ahora Que Hago?” is a comic program featuring Adal Ramones… in real life. In this series Adal shows the real life of a celebrity, how he learns to balance his life both as a public figure and as a father. In “Y Ahora Que Hago?” you will see how a tv star overcomes stressful situations with a good attitude toward life.

Con la llegada de la cuaresma además de la clásica pregunta: ¿Qué sacrificio vas a ofrecer? viene la pregunta: ¿Qué voy a hacer de comer el viernes? a veces si tengo todo el menú planeado, pero a veces acabo haciendo quesadillas con ensalada. Este año quisiera hacer las cosas diferente, quisiera probar nuevas recetas.

Hoy les comparto una receta que inventé cuando estaba con antojo de algo ligero y nutritivo pero con gran sabor. Es perfecta para la cuaresma o días de calor. Hasta ahora sigue siendo la favorita de la familia y de amigos también. No he conocido persona a la que yo le haya gustado, espero que a ti te guste también.

Ensalada de Atún a la Mexicana de Silvia

1/4 taza cebolla blanca picada finamente
1 jitomate roma picado finamente
1 chile serrano (o dos o tres si lo quieres mas picoso o puedes omitirlo si no comes picante)
1 tallo de apio
1 chile pimiento verde picado finamente (o rojo o amarillo)
2 cucharadas soperas de salsa catsup
Jugo de dos limones medianos o 3 pequeños
1/2 taza de chicharos congelados
1/2 taza de granos de elote congelados
1 lata (6 oz) de atún en agua
2 tazas de lechuga de bola (iceberg) rebanada finamente
1/2 taza de cilantro picado
1 aguacate
sal al gusto

Mezcla en un tazón grande la cebolla, jitomate, serrano, apio, pimiento, catsup y limón. Déjalo reposar. Descongela los chícharos y el elote en el microondas de acuerdo a las especificaciones de sus bolsas; déjalos enfriar. Agrega los chícharos, elotes, atún, lechuga, cilantro, aguacate y sal a los ingredientes en el tazón. Mezcla bien y ponla en el refrigerador por 15 minutos. Sirve con galletas saladas, galletas Ritz o (mi opcion favorita) sobre tostadas. ¡Buen provecho!

Lent is here and in addition to the official question, “What are you giving up?,” I always ask myself, “What am I going to cook next Friday?” Sometimes I run out of ideas and end up making quesadillas and salad, but this year I would love to try new recipes.

That’s why I’m going to propose something to you. Do you have a meatless (without chicken, pork, or beef) recipe you would like to share with me? If you do and would like to feature it at Mama Latina Tips in the next few weeks, please leave me a comment, don’t forget to leave your email, blog, or other contact info, or you can send me an email.

For now, I will share one I created when I wanted to have a light and nutritious meal without sacrificing flavor. This one is a winner. Perfect for Lent or on a very hot day. Everyone loves it, I hope you will too!

Silvia’s Mexican Tuna Salad

1/4 cup white onion finely chopped
1 roma tomato finely chopped
1 serrano pepper finely chopped (or more if you want it spicier, or you can omit it if you don’t)
1 celery stalk
1 green bell pepper finely chopped (or yellow or red )
2 Tablespoons ketchup
2 medium or 3 small limes, juice only
1/2 cup frozen sweet peas
1/2 cup frozen corn kernels
1 (6 oz) can tuna in water
2 cups chopped fresh iceberg lettuce
1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
1 avocado
salt to taste

Combine in a bowl onion, tomato, serrano pepper, celery, bell pepper, ketchup and lime juice. Set aside. Defrost sweet peas and corn following microwave directions from their package; let them cool down. Add sweet peas, corn, tuna, lettuce, cilantro and avocado to onion-tomato mixture. Salt to taste, mix well, chill for 15 minutes. Serve with Ritz crackers, saltine crackers, or (my favorite option) Mexican tostadas. Buen Provecho!

Siempre me da mucha alegría cuando encuentro nuevos recursos que me ayuden en mi tarea de criar niños bilingües, sobre todo si se trata de música en español para niños. Si tú estas criando tus hijos bilingües o si te interesa que tus hijos aprendan español, esta información puede ser de utilidad para ti.

I’m always very happy to find a new resource in my quest to raise bilingual children, and I’m ecstatic when I find music for children in Spanish! If you are raising bilingual children, or if you would like to expose your children to Spanish, this may interest you.

In addition, the CD comes with the lyrics in Spanish and English, so if you are not a Spanish speaker you still can sing along and know what you are singing.

Sin embargo hay tanto que ver y tanto que hacer que a veces hubiera deseado tener un guía turístico sólo para mí.  Bueno, pues déjame contarte que si tu tienes servicio celular con Verizon puedes accesar a una aplicación que es casi casi, como tu guía turístico personal. Con esta aplicación tú puedes obtener ayuda e información actualizada de las actividades a llevar a cabo tanto en Disneylandia (California), como en Disney World (Florida), por ejemplo:

* Tiempo de espera de las atracciones, y FASTPASS
* Localización de tus personajes favoritos, y atracciones, usando mapas en GPS
* Restaurantes para desayunar, almorzar, comer, o sólo tomar un snack

But there is a new app for Verizon Wireless phones that probably is the closest thing to a planner. Prepárense porque el 5 de marzo se estrenará a nivel nacional en los Estados Unidos, y seguro muy pronto en latinoamérica y España, la tan esperada versión en 3D de “Alicia en el País de las Maravillas”, dirigida por Tim Burton. El guión de esta película esta basado en los libros “Aventuras de Alicia en el País de las Maravillas” (1865) y “A través del espejo” (1871) de Lewis Carroll.

Sinopsis

Johnny Deep es el sombrerero loco, Mia Wasikowska es Alicia, quien a los 19 años, regresa al mundo fantástico que conoció cuando era niña, para reencontrarse con sus amigos de la infancia: el conejo blanco, Tweedledee y Tweedledum (Patachunta y Patachún), el lirón, la oruga azul, el gato de Cheshire, y por supuesto, el sombrerero loco. Alicia se embarca en un viaje fántastico para encontrar su verdadero destino y terminar con el reino del terror de la Reina Roja.

El elenco lo encabezan, Johnny Depp, Mia Wasikowska, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Crispin Glover y Matt Lucas.

Afortunadamente para mí he tenido chocolates por algún tiempo en la casa, ¿recuerdan que anteriormente les comenté que comer chocolate me ayudaba con mi dolor de muelas? (si, es en serio, ¡no se rían!) pues casi devoré una gigantesca barra de chocolate belga con nueces garapiñadas y fruta secas de Fresh & Easy, con ayuda de mi familia por supuesto. Y todavía tenemos la mitad de una caja de trufas de chocolate, ¡deliciosas! sólo que están escondidas para que no las vean mis hijos.

No es un secreto para nadie que me encanta F&E y en las últimas dos semanas ha sido casi una bendición tener uno cerca da casa. Con el tremendo dolor de muelas que me cargué for tanto tiempo ni ganas de cocinar tenía, entonces mandé a mi esposo y a mi hijo a F&E a comprar comida preparada. Por una semana entera sólo comimos F&E, lo mejor de todo es que solamente tenía que sacar la comida del paquete ponerla en un plato y calentar en el micro, que belleza ¿no? Me encantó el pollo con salsa de mango y arroz y mis hijos se devoraron el espagueti y albóndigas. Tienes que probarlos, digo, si tienes la fortuna de vivir cerca de uno de estos supermercados verdes. Si andas por ahí no olvides checar su extensa variedad de vinos, cómprate una barra de chocolate Belga, como la que te conté, unas flores ¡y ya!, estás lista para el Día de los Enamorados, ¡y sin vaciar la cartera!

Valentine’s day is just four days away! I need to start planning something… shhhh don’t tell my husband.

For me, Valentine’s day wouldn’t be complete without chocolates, wine and roses, pretty romantic, huh? But we got a head start this year and tried a delicious Belgian milk chocolate bar with candied pecans and fruit pieces from the Fresh and Easy Supermarket, along with some Swiss truffles, soooooo delicious. I know it’s a little early, but remember I told you a few days ago I was eating chocolate to help me with my tooth pain, well, it seemed to help. The chocolate bar is gone but I still have some truffles hidden from my children.

It’s no secret I love Fresh & Easy and in the last couple of weeks it has been great to have one so close to home. That mother-of-all-toothaches meant I had no time or energy to cook. So I sent my husband and son to F&E to buy quite a few of their yummy ready to eat meals. You just heat them up. For five days in a row, we ate those, and they were really good. I loved the mango chicken with rice and the kids loved the spaghetti with meatballs. Check them out, they are scrumptious and very affordable. And while you are there, check out their great wine selection, get some of that Belgian chocolate, throw in some roses and you’ve got everything you need for Valentine’s day....and it won’t break the bank!!

Salir de vacaciones con niños siempre es una aventura. Te comparto 10 de mis tips para disfrutar este tiempo juntos sin distracciones.

1. Elige un lugar apto para niños, donde puedan tocar cosas, correr y ser ellos mismos.
2. Haz una lista de lo que necesitarás. Yo usualmente hago una por persona, es mucho mas fácil para mi empacar todo.
3. Checa que tienes todo lo que necesitas en el coche, carreola, silla para restaurante, scooter, etc. La última vez que fuimos de vacaciones olvidé la carreola y no quiero ni contarte los problemas que esto causó.
4. Prepara algunos juegos para entretener a los niños en el coche. Y trae algunos otros, como uno, para jugar en tus vacaciones, juegos de mesa siempre unen a mi familia.
5. Checa con anterioridad sobre lugares que sean aptos para niños para ir a comer.
6. Esto es muy importante para nosotros, no esperes mucho de los niños. Ellos no siempre quieren ver lo que tú quieres que vean, o quieren hacer lo que tú quieres que hagan, si no tienes altas expectaciones, todos disfrutarán de las vacaciones.
7. Recuerda que los niños necesitan correr de vez en cuando para gastar energía y sentirse mejor, siempre busca un lugar donde puedan hacerlo, y déjalos libres por un rato.
8. Apaga tu teléfono celular, todavía recuerdo nuestra vida sin ellos, y si, sobreviviremos.
9. Detente en el banco y saca dinero en efectivo, posiblemente no podrás usar tu tarjeta de crédito en todos los lugares.
10. Prepárate para lo inesperado, empaca medicina para niños, y termómetro. Almacena en tu coche, agua, toallas de papel, cambio de ropa, bolsas de plástico, periódico, etc. Yo no sabía que mi hijo se mareaba en el coche hasta que en un viaje empezó a vomitar, afortunadamente contaba con lo necesario en el coche para ponerlo cómodo, proteger el coche y esperar hasta llegar a casa y limpiar a profundidad.

Going on a vacation with kids is always an adventure, here are 10 of my tips to make it easier for everybody.

1. Choose a kid friendly place, where they can touch things, run and be themselves.
2. Make a packing check list. I usually make a list for each person in the family so it’s easier for me to do the packing.
3. Check that you have your kids equipment in the car, stroller, booster seats for restaurants, scooter, etc. The last time we went on vacation I forgot my stroller!! I don’t want to tell you the problems that caused.
4. Prepare some games to keep the kids happy on the road. We usually play “I spy” or we look for specific colored cars, etc, the kids love it. And bring some games like “Uno” to play at the site, we love the way games connect my family.
5. Check ahead for kid friendly places to eat.
6. This is a must for us, have low expectations, sounds negative but it’s not: For example, the kids don’t always do what we want them to do, or want to see what we want them to see. In a beautiful zoo, my son preferred to chase squirrels rather than see the beautiful lions.
7. Remember that kids need to run to burn some energy and focus, let them be, they will be happier and so will you.
8. Turn off cellphones, I still remember our life without them, and yes, we survived
9. Stop at the ATM and get some cash, you may not be able to use your credit card everywhere.
10. Be prepared for the unexpected, always carry meds for kids, thermometer, and have items in your car you may need, like water, paper towels, a big quilt, plastic bags, etc. I didn’t know my first son had motion sickness until he started vomiting in the car, yes, not pretty, lucky for me I had water and a change of clothes and a quilt to cover the car until we got home to clean it up.

Por las últimas dos semanas decidir que comer ha sido todo un reto para mí. Todavía mi herida está sanando y todavía tengo mucho dolor, así que estoy comiendo cosas que sean blandas, calientitas y que al mismo tiempo satisfagan mi hambre. Mi dieta es, por el momento, avena, leche, plátanos, aguacate, papaya, yogurt y sopas (bueno, también he comido algo de chocolate lo que de alguna manera alivia mi dolor un poco, ¿no es fantástico? de esto hablaré con mas calma en otra ocasión).

Algo de lo que nunca me canso de comer son quesadillas y afortunadamente están en mi lista de lo que últimamente puedo comer también, son muy fáciles de hacer y siempre ¡deliciosas! Tengo que confesar que recibí un shock cultural la primera vez que comí quesadillas en Estados Unidos, queso amarillo no es realmente mi idea de quesadilla. Si tu has estado, o has vivido en México y has probado una quesadilla real, tu sabrás de lo que estoy hablando. En México utilizamos queso asadero, oaxaca o manchego para nuestras quesadillas, así que cada vez que voy a una tienda busco en la sección de quesos a ver si puedo encontrar uno de estos. Me gusta mucho el queso fresco, el cual afortunadamente puedo encontrar en casi cualquier tienda en los Estados Unidos y aunque este queso da buen sabor, no se derrite y para que sea una verdadera quesadilla el queso tiene que ir derretido o ¿no?

Estoy contenta de compartirles que finalmente ¡encontré uno! probé la mezcla de quesos artesanales mexicanos de Sargento (Sargento Artisan Authentic Mexican cheese) y se ha convertido en mi favorita. La bolsa viene con una mezcla de queso asadero, gallego, manchego y anejo enchilado! Me encanta para mis quesadillas, pero también para mis tostadas y enchiladas. Este queso, en mi opinión, es lo más cercano al verdadero sabor de una quesadilla mexicana.

Tú puedes hacer todo un platillo con quesadillas, yo siempre uso tortillas de maíz, queso, por supuesto, y agrego jitomate, aguacate, lechuga y salsa (como mi salsa de aguacate), a veces también le pongo una rebanada de jamón o pavo ¡y ya!, es perfecto para el almuerzo o snack. Agrega unos frijolitos y fruta y tienes una comida completa!! ¡las quesadillas han sido mi salvación estas dos últimas semanas!

Disclosure: Yo había usado productos Sargento mucho antes de probar la mezcla mexicana, cuando Sargento me ofreció unas bolsas para probar, dije que si porque la combinación de quesos me intrigo, y ahora es mi favorita. No he recibido otra compensación mas que algunas bolsas de queso para mi familia. Nadie me ha pedido que haga buenos comentarios, las opiniones en este artículo son sólo mías.

For the last couple of weeks eating has been a challenge for me, I’m still healing and I’m still in pain, so I been trying to eat foods that are soft, warm, while at the same time make me feel satisfied. So my diet has been oatmeal, milk, bananas, yogurt, and soups (well I have to say I’ve been eating chocolate, too, which by the way seems to help me with the pain, isn’t that fantastic!? But I will tell you about that another time).

One of my all time favorite foods is the quesadilla, and I have been able to eat them lately as well. They are so easy to make and so delicious! However, I have to say, I experienced some culture shock when I tried ”quesadillas” in the USA, cheddar cheese is really not my idea of quesadilla cheese. If you’ve been in Mexico, or have lived in Mexico, and have had the opportunity to try a real quesadilla, you will understand what I’m talking about. We usually make quesadillas with queso asadero, or oaxaca, or manchego. So I’m always looking in stores to see if I can find the right queso for my quesadilla. I like queso fresco which is widely available in stores in the USA, however, this cheese, while it gives me the closest flavor to my Mexican quesadillas, doesn’t melt, which is a “must” in a real quesadilla.

Finally I found the one! I’m so happy!! I tried Sargento Artisan Authentic Mexican cheese and it soon became my favorite. This is a blend of queso asadero, gallego, manchego and anejo enchilado, yummy! I love it for my quesadillas but I also found that I love it in my tostadas and enchiladas, too. This, for me, is the closest real flavor to a mexican quesadilla.

Quesadillas can be a whole meal if you want, I always use corn tortillas, add cheese, of course, plus some tomato, avocado, lettuce, and salsa (like my avocado salsa), you can even add some turkey or ham deli meat and voila! you have a perfect lunch or snack. Add some beans and fruit and you will have a good dinner! Quesadillas have been my life savers these past two weeks!!

Disclosure: I’ve been eating Sargento products long before I was introduced to the Authentic Mexican blend. When Sargento offered to send some samples of it, I was intrigued about the flavor. I’m so happy I did say yes, because now it is my favorite. I haven’t received any compensation except for some sample bags of cheese for my family to try. Lo único es que Lola va desarrollando relaciones personales y si lees el primer libro, encontrarás estas relaciones en su etapa inicial. Por ejemplo, en Living La Vida Lola, Lola se reune con Jack Callghan, su amor de preparatoria. El ha estado fuera de su vida por muchos años. En Hasta La Vida, Lola!, la relación entre Lola y Jack ha crecido. Pero no dejes que nada te detenga en leer los libros en cualquier orden, son muy divertidos.

Do you have a fun story about meeting your husband’s mexican family? Did you see My Big Fat Greek Wedding? Remember the scene in the church where the groom’s side has a trickling of people, and the bride’s side is bursting at the seams? That was our wedding, only in reverse! My husband comes from a big family, with lots of extended family, and everyone was invited. Add to that that random people just showed up, and friends of friends of friends, and there were more people at my wedding who I didn’t know, than who I did know.

In particular, there is this one guy I remember. He was wearing a turtleneck and was very rico suave on the dance floor, if you know what a mean *wink wink*. He’s prominently featured in our wedding album and neither my husband nor I know who he is!

Can we read, “Hasta la Vista Lola” independently from “Livin’ la Vida Lola,” or should we read them in order? Great question! They don’t have to be read in order at all. The only caveat to that is that Lola’s personal relationships develop, so when you go back to an earlier book, relationships might be newer. For example, in Living the Vida Lola, Lola is reunited with Jack Callaghan, her high school crush. He’s been out of her life for a lot of years. In Hasta la Vista, Lola!, Jack’s and Lola’s relationship has taken a few steps forward. But don’t let anything stop you from reading the books in any order! They’re just plain fun.

Do you know how many books there will be in the Lola series? Hasta la Vista, Lola! is the 2nd book in the Lola Cruz Mystery Series. The first, Living the Vida Lola, came out last January. I’m working on the third book, Bare Naked Lola, but it’s not under contract yet. Of course I am hoping the series will continue!

Do you foresee writing in different genres in the future? Aside from the Lola Cruz books, my great love is women’s fiction/literary fiction. I’m working on a women’s fiction novel with magic realism, which is extremely challenging and rewarding. I don’t plan to branch into other genre areas, but to stay focused on the areas I love to read and write.

Where have you had a life-long desire to visit? Ireland! There’s something magical about Ireland, at least in my mind. I hope to visit there in my not-so-far-away future.

Por más de 25 años ella se ha dedicado a ayudar a personas a alcanzar sus objetivos de salud a través de videos, libros y tips saludables en su página web.

También busque la forma de simplificar los hábitos alimenticios de las personas. Yo ofrezco 12 poderosos alimentos que la gente debería comer para tener una dieta balanceada, además las recetas son rápidas y fáciles de preparar. 3. ¿Cuál es el mejor consejo de salud que te hayan dado en tu vida? Oh, ¡he recibido tantos maravillosos consejos de muchos de mis mentores en mi vida! Un consejo que se destaca entre los demás en mi mente viene de mi padre, quien fue un jugador profesional de beisbol y tuvo una ética profesional increíble. El nunca llegó tarde a ningun lugar y siempre nos dijo, “Mientras mas duro trabajes, mas afortunado seras”, y es algo que se me quedo bien grabado. Yo creo en el poder del trabajo duro y esta disciplina siempre paga!

4. ¿Qué sugerencias podrías dar a las mamás que están pasando por la etapa de no-verduras con sus pequeños? Bueno, empieza siendo un buen modelo, escogiendo y comiendo comidas naturales y saludables enfrente de ellos. Sigue invitándolos a probar diferentes cosas - ¡generalmente me tomó entre cinco y ocho intentos antes de encontrar comidas saludables que les gustaran a mis hijas! No te preocupes, conforme van creciendo, sus paladares se irán desarrollando. Por ahora es buena idea hacer una lista de snacks saludables que ellos puedan disfrutar. Es mas divertido comer verduras si usas un aderezo ranch bajo en calorías por ejemplo. Para un delicioso dip para frutas, combina una taza de pure de manzana con una taza de yogurt de sabor de bajas calorias y sírvelo con rebanadas de fresas, manzanas, plátanos, piña o uvas. También, trata de agregar verduras picadas finamente a tus sopas o guisados, ¡ellos ni lo notarán!

5. Cuando no estas trabajando, o ejercitándote, ¿cuál es tu actividad favorita? ¡Esto es fácil! Mi actividad favorita es pasar tiempo con mi esposo Jeff y mis hijas Kelly y Katy. Comer juntos, salir a pasear o simplemente relajarnos y quedarnos en casa, ¡siempre nos la pasamos super!

I know how busy people are these days, and I wanted to show people that they really can fit in the time to be healthy – that it’s worth it and that it doesn’t take as much time as many think it does. That’s why in Denise’s Daily Dozen I give exercises that can be done quickly, in 12 minutes a day – I wanted to show readers the minimum daily requirement they need to get fit. I also sought to simplify people’s eating habits. I gave 12 power foods that people should eat for a balanced diet, plus recipes that are quick and easy to make. Plus, people are always asking me, “What do you really eat? What do you cook for your family?” and this book is my answer to those questions!

2. You know how hectic a mom’s life can be, what would you suggest to busy moms to find time to exercise? No matter how hectic life can be, I think most people can put aside 12 minutes a day to do some easy at-home exercising. But don’t forget to sneak in exercise in other ways, wherever you can. This means parking further away from the supermarket; taking the stairs instead of the elevator at work; bringing your kids to the park instead of to the movies; and doing squats in the bathroom while you brush your teeth or leg lifts in the kitchen while you prepare dinner. Those little moments of fitness really do add up to a healthy, active lifestyle!

3. What is the best fitness advice you have ever received in your life? Oh, I’ve received so much wonderful advice from the many great mentors I’ve had in my life! One piece of advice that stands out in my mind came from my father, who was a professional baseball player and had an unbelievably strong work ethic. He was never late for anything, and always told us, “The harder you work, the luckier you get!” which really stuck with me. I believe in the power of hard work, and that discipline pays off!

4. What suggestions can you give to moms who are experiencing the no-vegetable toddler-preschooler stage? Well, start by being a good role model yourself by making a point to enjoy natural, wholesome foods in front of them. Keep encouraging them to try lots of different things—it usually took about five to eight tries before I found healthy meals that my girls liked! Don’t worry — as they grow up, their palates will develop. But for now it’s a good idea to make a list of fun, healthy snacks that they can enjoy. Veggies can be a lot more fun when paired with a low-fat ranch dip, for instance! For a yummy fruit dip, combine one cup of applesauce with one cup of low-fat flavored yogurt and serve with sliced strawberries, apples, bananas, pineapple, or grapes. Also, try mixing chopped or grated veggies into soups or casseroles – they won’t even notice!

5. When you are not working, or working out, what is your favorite thing to do? That’s easy! My favorite thing in the world to do is to spend time with my husband, Jeff, and my daughters, Kelly and Katie. Eating a meal as a family, going on an outing, or even just relaxing at home – we always have a blast.

Todavía recuerdo el tablero de Damas Chinas que mi mamá y yo solíamos usar tan a menudo, yo tendría como 6 ó 7 años cuando aprendí este juego. Ahora me encanta jugarlo con mi cincoañero! Los juegos de mesa siempre han sido parte de mi vida.

Es por esto que cuando Growing Tree Toys me preguntó si me interesaría en dar mi opinión sobre uno de sus juguetes educativos, inmediatamente dije que si.

El juego que escogí se llama Qwirkle, es un juego de estrategia para 2-4 jugadores. El objetivo es obtener el mayor numero de puntos después de haber usado todas las fichas. Las fichas se van jugando igualando ya sea el color o la figura con las que ya están sobre la mesa. Mi hijo y yo lo hemos jugado regularmente desde que lo recibimos y siempre nos divertimos mucho. Toma mas o menos media hora terminarlo. Cuando mi esposo se nos une es aún más divertido porque tenemos que pensar nuestras próximas jugadas con mayor cuidado.

Las fichas de Qwirkle son de madera con muy buen acabado, y viene con una bolsa de tela que sirve tanto para pasarla entre los jugadores durante el juego como para guardarlo después de terminar. Es perfecto para niños porque no se necesita saber leer para jugarlo y las fichas son fáciles de manipular. A mi hijo le encanta sumar los puntos, lo que además lo ayuda con su aritmética! Es un excelente juego para tener en casa, es fácil de guardar y ni siquiera necesitas un tablero para jugarlo, puedes usar el suelo o tu mesa del comedor, ¡y a divertirse!

Since I was a little kid I remember playing board games with my mom and family. I still remember the chinese checkers board my mom and I used so often. I was very little, probably 6 or 7 years old. And now, I love to play the same game with my 5 year old. Games have always been a big part of my life.

That’s why when ”Growing Tree Toys” asked me to review one of their educational toys, I said yes!

The game I chose is called Qwirkle. It is a game of strategy for 2-4 players and the goal is to get the most points after playing all your tiles. Tiles are placed to form groups of colors, and shapes. My son and I have been playing regularly since we received it and we always have a great time. It takes about a half hour to play. When my husband join us, it is even better, because we need to think our moves more carefully.

Qwirkle is a very well made game, wooden tiles come with a bag both to pass around during the game and for storage afterwards. It’s perfect for little ones because reading is not required and the tiles are easy to manipulate with small hands. Players must think about possible moves and combinations ahead of their turns, and my son loves to add up the points, so he gets to practice his arithmetic! It is a great game to have at home, very easy to store and always ready and easy to set up. It doesn’t require a board, just get on the floor or sit at your dining table and have fun!

Qwirkle is for 6 year olds and up (even though my 5 year old has no problems playing it, except for occasional reminders to plan his next move ahead of time) and has won awards like “Mensa Select,” “The National Parenting Center Seal of Approval,” and “Parents Choice Gold.” And, of course, you can buy it at Growing Tree Toys.

En más de una ocasión he mencionado que me encanta Fresh & Easy, especialmente su comida preparada porque es muy sabrosa y muy natural. Si un día estoy de suerte y llego en el momento preciso puedo encontrar muchos productos casi regalados en su sección de ofertas, como el otro día, cuando compré tres paquetes de fajitas de res con arroz ¡por $1 cada uno!, en nuestra casa un paquete alimenta a dos, fue una super ganga, y eso sin mencionar que esa noche ¡no tuve que cocinar!

Algunos de nuestros productos favoritos son sus pretzels con miel, mermelada de fresa, arroz arborio, pizza y pudin de chocolate, hmmmmm! Cada que voy a una de sus tiendas compro algo diferente para probarlo, y hasta ahora nada me ha decepcionado, al contrario. A mi hijo mayor le encanta acompañarme, siempre me ayuda con el carrito (lo que no hace en otras tiendas, regularmente se la pasa corriendo entre los pasillos, clásico cincoañero) y por supuesto siempre hace su parada reglamentaria en la “mesa de la cocina” donde podemos probar algunos de sus productos.

Hace un par de días estaba leyendo en su página web acerca de sus especiales de la semana y los productos que ofrecerán para probar. Cuando abrí la página de novedades me enteré que en este momento y hasta el 15 enero tienen un centro de reciclado para todas tus tarjetas de navidad usadas. Fresh & Easy esta colaborando con una organizacion no lucrativa llamada American Forest, básicamente, tu llevas tus tarjetas para reciclar y ellos plantan árboles, ¿que tal?

Y estando por ahí en la página, hice un descubrimiento, Fresh & Easy ya tiene su página web en Español! donde puedes encontrar exactamente la misma información que en la de Inglés. También tienen su blog en español donde siempre publican recetas, recuerdas mis enchiladas verdes? por ahi las puedes encontrar.

On more than one occasion I’ve mentioned I love Fresh & Easy. I specially like their prepared foods, they are very natural and very tasty. If I’m lucky enough to get there at the right time, I can catch amazingly discounted products in their clearance area, like the other day, when I got three bowls of beef fajitas and rice for $1.00 each!! Each bowl feeds two people in my house so it was a great deal, not to mention I didn’t have to cook that night!

Some of my other favorites are the F&E honey wheat braided pretzels, F&E strawberry preserves, F&E arborio rice, F&E pizza, and F&E chocolate pudding, yummy! Every time I go I get something different to try out, it’s soooo much fun, my son loves to go with me and he always helps me with the cart, which is no small task for a very energetic 5 year old. Of course he loves to stop at the sampling table to get some yummy bites, too.

No too long ago I was reading their web page about their weekly specials, the menu at their kitchen tasting table, and what’s new at F&E, and I found out that right at this moment until January 15th you can bring your used holiday greeting cards to be recycled. F&E is partnering with the nonprofit organization American Forest. You bring your cards and they will plant trees!

In case you know somebody who doesn’t speak or read English, let me tell you that F&E has a Spanish blog, where they published my Enchiladas Verdes Recipe last September (here is the link for the recipe in English), they also have a Spanish webpage with the same exact info you can find in the English version, cool!

Mi esposo me comentó a media semana que quería ir al cine a ver Avatar. Yo había escuchado hablar sobre esta película pero, sinceramente, no le había puesto mucha atención. Así que ni tarda ni perezosa me fui a la computadora a checar el corto de la película, ¡me encantó! y como ni me gusta ir a al cine (mentira, mentira) pues le hablé a varios de nuestros amigos para ver si alguien mas se animaba a ir con nosotros. Finalmente el día llego y juntos nuestros amigos, y nosotros nos fuimos al cine a verla, ¡wow! la vimos en 3D (no recuerdo cuando fue la última vez que vi una película en 3D, pero me acuerdo que en aquella ocasión usé los lentes esos de cartón que nunca se acomodan a las orejas y los tienes que sostener todo el tiempo para que no se caigan) Definitivamente tienes que verla en 3D.

La historia me recordó un poco un par de películas que he visto (que no mencionaré para no arruinarles el show), pero muchos de los efectos, imágenes, y personajes es algo que no había visto antes. Last week my husband mentioned to me his interest in going to the movies to see “Avatar”. I’d heard about it, but, honestly I didn’t know exactly what it was about. Then I watched the trailer and I was hooked! I called some friends to ask if they would like to join us. We bought tickets for the 3D show, definitely a must (I don’t remember the last time I got to watch a movie in 3D, but I do remember using those old 3D cardboard glasses that never stayed on and I had to hold them the whole time).

The story line was reminiscent of a couple of other movies I’ve seen (don’t worry, I won’t mention them here) but there were lots of characters, effects, and images that were completely new to me. Definitely a movie you have to see. Here is the trailer.

¿Recuerdan del evento de Got Milk? al que asistí en diciembre? aquí pueden leer mi artículo, y la receta del café de tres leches. Hoy les comparto otra riquísima receta proporcionada for Got Milk? (Toma Leche)

Martini Latte de Mocha y Menta

2 caballitos (shots) de café espresso o café cargado recién preparado
1 cucharada sopera de jarabe de chocolate
2 cucharadas soperas de caramelo de menta triturado - separados en mitad
8 onzas (1 taza) de leche
1 taza de hielo

Toma la copa o al vaso que utilizarás, humedece los bordes y colocala sobre la mitad del caramelo triturado hasta que todo el borde quede cubierto. En la coctelera agrega el café, el jarabe de chocolate y el resto del caramelo de menta. Revuelve hasta que el jarabe y el caramelo se disuelvan completamente. Agrega la leche y el hielo y agita vigorosamente. Cuélalo en tu vaso preparado, ¡que lo disfrutes!

Do you remember my post about the Holiday Lattes event organized by Got Milk? You can read all about it here and check out the Tres Leches Latte Recipe as well. Today I would like to share another yummy recipe. Here it is:

Peppermint Mocha Martini Latte

2 shots espresso or strong brewed coffee
1 Tbsp. chocolate syrup
2 Tbsp. crushed peppermints - divided
8 oz. milk
1 cup ice

Begin by dipping the rim of your martini glass in water, then dip the rim in 1 tbsp. of crushed peppermint. In a martini shaker, place your fresh espresso shots, chocolate and remainder of the peppermint. Stir until chocolate and peppermint are dissolved. Then add milk and ice and shake vigorously. Strain into martini glass and enjoy this refreshing, minty drink! (recipe provided by Got Milk?)

Uno de mis propósitos de año nuevo es “tratar” de tener una casa mas organizada. Pero para llegar a esto, tengo que empezar con una casa limpia, y tú sabes muy bien, que si tienes niños pequeños, la casa NUNCA se ve limpia. Aún cuando recién limpio puedes ver miles de bloques, pelotas y libros esparcidos por todo el piso, si, ya se, estoy exagerando un poco, pero te lo imaginas ¿no?

A mi no me gustan las alfombras, uno de los días mas felices de mi vida es cuando mi esposo y yo quitamos todas las alfombras de nuestra casa e instalamos pisos laminados de madera (muy felíz pero un poco frustrada con mi contratista, verás, el me dijo “podemos instalar el piso en tres días durante un fin de semana sin ningún problema” y yo le dije “perfecto, ¡adelante entonces!” y le tomó 4 meses terminar!!) perdón por la ligera desviación en el tema tenía que desahogarme, estaba diciendo que me encantan mis pisos laminados y mis azulejos en la oficina y mis baños también. En mi opinión personal son mucho mas fáciles de limpiar y permanecen limpios por mucho más tiempo, bueno, dos o tres veces a la semana necesitamos darles una pasadita, pero es algo que se hace rápido con un sacudidor de pisos que tengo. Sin embargo cada semana y media si necesitan limpieza mas profunda y como es madera, necesito tener mucho cuidado de no dejar los pisos mojados por mucho tiempo. Así que mi rutina para limpiar es esta: barrer, sacudir ventanas y muebles, ponerle limpiador a una cubeta con agua, mojar el trapeador, limpiar el piso, exprimir el trapeador, darle otra pasada, exprimir el trapeador, darle otra pasada y luego tomar otro trapeador seco para tratar de extraer lo mas de humedad que pueda de los pisos, muy divertido, ¿no creen? bueno pues esto multiplícalo por 8 porque tengo que limpiar cada habitación separamente, en pocas palabras la sola limpieza profunda de mis pisos me toma dos o tres días.

Entonces a finales del año pasado (suena como que fue hace mucho tiempo ¿verdad?) Shark tuvo la grandiosa idea de contactarme para preguntarme si estaría interesada en probar su trapeador de vapor, para ser honesta contigo, no tenía la menor idea de lo que un trapeador de vapor era, así que fui a Google a checar, y después de ver el video demostrando como limpiar pisos en minutos, ingrese a mi email y les dije, si, si, si, si, si!! me encantaría probarlo.

Me dió mucho gusto cuando recibí la caja con mi Shark (este es el nombre del trapeador), saqué todas las piezas de la caja y lo ensamblé en en un abrir y cerrar de ojos, en cinco minutos estaba listo para ser usado. Y desde entonces mi rutina de limpieza es otra: barrer, sacudir ventanas y muebles, poner agua en mi Shark, conectarlo, limpiar los pisos, y ya!. No mas exprimidera, no mas secadera!! ¿y les mencioné que no necesitas ningun tipo de limpiador?, nope, nada, ¡sólo agua!

Desafortunadamente no hay mucha información en la web en español sobre este trapeador, así que les comento algunas de sus bondades: utiliza vapor que es bombeado mientras trapeas, viene con cinco almohadillas limpiadoras, para azulejo, madera, así como un aditamento que refresca y deodoriza tapetes y alfombras, el mango se ajusta a la estatura del usuario y al final puedes lavar las almohadillas en la lavadora, ¿qué tal?

El fin de semana pasado tuvimos visitas y limpié la cocina, comedor, sala, lobby, pasillos, un baño y la recámara de mi hijo mayor en 25 minutos, ¡no lo pude creer!, mi esposo me ayudó con la barrida, pero de todas formas limpiamos en un tiempo record. Cuándo estaba terminando de limpiar, mi esposo me preguntó, entonces que opinas, ¿te gusta el Shark? y yo le dije: ¿estas bromeando? ¡esta cosa ha cambiado mi vida!!!

In my new year’s post I mentioned one of my resolutions is to “try” to have a more organized house. To get there, I need to have a clean house first, and you know how a house with small children NEVER looks clean. Even when my house is clean, you can spot thousands of blocks, balls, and books any given day strewn on the floor, I’m exaggerating, but you get the picture.

I absolutely hate carpets, one of the happiest days of my life was when we pulled all the carpet out of our house and installed laminated flooring, (happy, but a little frustrated with the contractor’s time frame, see, he said to me, “I can do it in a three day weekend, no problem”, I said, “great! go for it!”, and it took him 4 months!!!) So sorry, slight digression, anyway, I love my laminated flooring and my tile in my office and bathrooms, too. They are easier and faster to clean, in my humble opinion, and they stay clean longer, well, that’s not exactly true, they need to be dusted with a swiffer two or three times a week, but that’s not a difficult task to accomplished. Every other week they need to have a deeper cleaning, but because laminate is kind of wood I need to be very careful to not leave them wet for too long. So my routine is something like this. I sweep the floors, I dust windows and furniture, I get a bucket with water and cleaner, I wet the floors, I squeeze my mop, clean the floors, squeeze mop again, go back to the floors, and finish with another piece of “equipment”, namely, a broom with a dry piece of cloth so I can dry the floors or at least take most of the wetness out. Fun ha? now… think of doing this 8 times! yes, I need to do every room separately right? So yes, I need to do my deep cleaning in a two to three day period, “that’s life,” I normally would say.

But.... last year (it sounds very far away, doesn’t it, I still feel funny saying 2010) Shark had the stupendous idea of contacting me to ask me if I would like to try their Steam Pocket Mop. To be honest with you I had no idea what a steam mop was! So I Googled it, and after just five minutes of watching a video of the Shark cleaning in minutes I went back to my email and said, yes, yes, yes, yes, I would love to try it.

I was very excited when I received the package, the assembly was a breeze and I was ready to try it in no time. And now...my life of cleaning as I knew it is gone.... My cleaning routine looks like this: I sweep the floors, I dust windows and furniture, I put water in my Shark, plug it in, clean my floors, done. No more squeezes, no more drying! And did I mention I don’t need to use any kind of cleaner either? It’s true, just water, that’s it.

Last weekend we had some friends over and I cleaned my kitchen, dining room, living room, lobby, my oldest son’s bedroom, one bath and hall floors in 25 minutes!! I couldn’t believe it! Of course my hubby swept for me first, but still it was done it record time. After I finished cleaning, my husband asked me, “so what do you think about the Shark, do you like it?” and I said, “are you kidding me? This thing has changed my life!

Mi Opinión

Enero es generalmente el mes en el que la mayoría de nosotros hacemos nuestros propósitos de comer mas sano y ponernos en línea, ¿verdad? pero díganme, ¿quién en este mundo le puede decir no al chocolate? definitivamente yo no, y ¡ni decir de mi esposo e hijos, quienes comerían chocolate todo el día si les diera permiso! Asi que he decidido que sí, comeré mas sano, pero de ninguna manera me privaré de mi chocolate, todo con medida.

Si tu eres un amante del chocolate, te va a encantar este libro. Es enorme, atractivo, e irresistible a la vista. Chocolate, Una Historia de Amor, es más que un libro de recetas, es un libro con sabor, especias y energía… Cada receta presenta una ilustración, a veces es una foto del platillo, a veces no, pero esto no disminuye su atractivo un céntimo. Tu no verás una clásica foto de libro de recetas, todas son diferentes y extravagantes, ¡me encantan todas!. Brenner además nos habla con cada receta, puede ser una experiencia, algún recuerdo, algun pensamiento or una historia, la cual enriquece cada una de ellas.

My Opinion

January is usually the month when most of us set our goals to get fit and eat healthier right? But, tell me seriously, who in the world can say no to chocolate? Not me, and don’t even ask my husband and kids, they would have chocolate for dinner, if I let them! So I’ve decided I will eat healthier and still have my chocolate rush now and then.

If you are a part of team chocolate, you are going to love this book. It’s big, beautiful, yummy, and visually irresistible. “Chocolate A Love Story” is more than a cook book, it has flavor, spice, energy… Every recipe comes with an image, sometimes it is a picture of the dish, sometimes it’s not, but each is fascinating nonetheless. You won’t see a typical cookbookish picture in this book, they are all different and extravagant, I really like them all! Brenner talks to us about almost every recipe, it can be a memory, an experience, a thought, or a story which enriches it.

Listen to these recipes’ names: Bohemian French Toast Chocolate Sandwiches; Soap Opera Chocolate Cappuccino Roulade; Bad Boy Chocolate Pizza; Love and Hate Doughnuts; Controversial Cherry Soup; Frozen Very Hot Margaritas… every recipe has it’s own personality.

One very nice touch that I really appreciate is the Metric Conversions page. It contains exact equivalents, helpful equivalents, and approximate equivalents by weight, volume, temperature, and length. I love this since I grew up using the metric system and still, after 8 year in the USA, need to check conversions all the time!

This is an exceptional book, if you are a chocolate lover you need this for your collection; if you are a mother, it will give you delish desserts for your family; if you like to entertain, this book will give you ideas with which to wow you guests. It makes a great gift, too, think Valentines Day!! Ok, maybe it’s too early, but believe me you will like this book.

Nuestra celebración de Navidad tuvo un toque mágico. El sábado 26 de diciembre agarramos el coche y manejamos al sur hasta llegar a San Diego y disfrutar de un hermoso día en Sea World. Mas tarde les contaré con mas detalle, por hoy los dejo con algunas fotos.

Our Christmas was magical. We just kept driving south until we hit San Diego and we enjoyed a beautiful December day at Sea World. I will let you know more about it later, especially about their new upcoming dolphin show Blue Horizons, but today I just wanted to share some pictures with you.

Para muchas personas en los Estados Unidos, la época navideña termina con la celebración del ano nuevo, pero no para mí y mi familia, no señor! nosotros todavía tenemos una celebración más en nuestro calendario: “Los Reyes Magos”. Cada cinco de enero en la noche familias se reunen a comer la rosca de reyes, así que hoy es el día perfecto para compartirlo contigo, ya que te da tiempo de comprar tu rosca y unirte a la celebración ¡mañana!

El mes pasado fui invitada por Spanglish Baby a participar en las series “Your Bicultural Holiday Traditions” (Tus tradiciones navideñas biculturales) y decidí escribir sobre los Reyes Magos. Mi artículo fue publicado el 21 de Diciembre en Inglés. Y hoy lo comparto contigo en Español:

En un mundo perfecto, nosotros pasaríamos cada temporada navideña en México. Los recuerdos mas felices de mi niñez se remontan a la celebración de la Navidad. Año con año nos reuníamos en casa de mi abuelita, jugaba con mis primos, celebraba las posadas, tomaba el ponche, le pegaba a la piñata, rezaba, arruyaba al niñito Jesús, abrazaba a todos los miembros de mi familia, cenaba después de la medianoche y al día siguiente regresaba para comer el recalentado después de haber ido a misa.

Ahora que vivo en Los Estados Unidos, cada año lo celebramos en diferente lugar, así que no tengo una tradicióón familiar asentada para Navidad con mi familia, sin embargo, las tradiciones son muy importantes para mi por lo que hemos escogido El Día de Reyes, como una de las tradiciones que año con año celebramos en nuestra casa.

Para mi El Día de Los Reyes Magos captura el verdadero significado de dar y recibir, es un día de alegría, familia, oración, pero también de expectación mientras esperamos a ver lo que Los Santos Reyes traerán de regalo a nuestros hijos.

Una de las ventajas de vivir en una familia bicultural es que podemos compartir diferentes tradiciones y enriquecer la vida de nuestros hijos. Así que en esta casa, mis hijos tienen a Santa Claus a quien le escriben su carta en inglés, y a los Reyes Magos a quienes les escriben en español.

Cada víspera del 5 de enero voy al mercado mexicano y compro la Rosca de Reyes mas grande que pueda encontrar y reuno a mi familia y amigos. Cuando mis amigos llegan, y antes de cenar, mi esposo lee la historia de los Reyes Magos en la biblia. Luego nos sentamos a la mesa a comer unos ricos tamales acompañados de frijoles y horchata o alguna otra bebida mexicana. Después dejamos a los niños jugar un rato mientras los adultos platicamos un poco.

Finalmente todos volvemos a la mesa a partir la Rosca de Reyes y comerla junto con nuestro chocolate caliente. Siempre es divertido ver como los niños parten su rebanada y buscan adentro de ella con el deseo de encontrar uno de los niñitos Jesús ¡escondidos en la rosca!

Al final del día, mis hijos toman sus zapatos y los colocan abajo del árbol de navidad junto con sus cartas a los Reyes Magos. Después muy obedientes se van a la cama, sabiendo que tienen que estar dormidos para que los Reyes vengan a la casa.

La mañana siguiente mis niños se levantan y van a checar que regalos les dejaron los Reyes Magos a un lado de sus zapatos. No hay nada mas luminoso en el mundo que sus sonrisas en sus caritas. ¡No puedo esperar!

For a lot of people the holiday season ends at New Year’s, but not for my family. We still have one more celebration on our calendar, The Feast of Los Reyes Magos (The Three Wise Men). This wonderful celebration is on the night of January 5th, and I thought today would be a good day to share this with you all, in case you want to join the fun. You still have time to get your rosca de reyes, gather your families, and celebrate!

Last month I was invited by Spanglish Baby to share one of my family’s holiday celebrations as a part of their “Your Bicultural Holiday Traditions” series and I chose the Feast of Los Reyes Magos (The Three Wise Men). My post was was published on December 21st, along with other great posts by latinas blogueras, you can check them all at Spanglish Baby.

Here it is:

In a perfect world we would spend every year in Mexico during the Christmas Season. I have wonderful memories of getting together each year at my abuelita’s house, of playing with my cousins, enjoying the posadas, drinking the ponche, smacking the piñatas, praying, rocking baby Jesus, hugging everybody, eating after midnight, and coming back the next day for leftovers.

Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to keep this Christmas tradition here in the States, because each year we have been in different places. But traditions are very important to me and one we have been able to keep in our home.

Los Reyes Magos, for me, captures the true meaning of giving and receiving at Christmastime. It’s a day of comfort, joy, family, and prayer, but also of excitement while waiting for the gifts Los Reyes bring to Baby Jesus and to our children.

I love that in my bilingual and bicultural family we get to share celebrations: My kids have both Santa Claus, to whom they write in English, and Los 3 Reyes Magos, to whom they write in Spanish

Every January 5th, I go to the Mexican market and buy the biggest “Rosca de Reyes” I can find and gather my family and as many of my dearest friends as possible.

When our guests arrive, and before we eat dinner, my husband reads the story of the Three Wise Men from the Bible. Then we eat tamales with refried beans and drink horchata or another mexican drink. Then we leave the kids to run and play for a little bit while the adults enjoy some conversation.

Finally we gather round the table and cut the Rosca de Reyes. It is very exciting to see the kids looking for the baby Jesus hidden inside their piece!! We always have Mexican-style hot chocolate in which to dip our bread, yum!

At the end of the day, my kids take their shoes and put them under the Christmas Tree along with their wish lists. They follow mama and papa dutifully to their normal bedtime routine which always goes smoothly because they know they need to be asleep in order to allow the Reyes Magos to come to our home.

The next morning the boys will get up and run to the living room to see what has been left next to their shoes! There is nothing sweeter than the smiles on those faces. I can’t wait!

El 2010 ya esta a la vuelta de la esquina y todavía no tenemos idea como lo celebraremos. Si me apego a la tradición tendría hoy que hacer todo lo que deseo que pase el próximo año, como ir a dormir temprano, hacer ejercicio, viajar y organizar mi casa, ufff, parece mucho para hacer en un día ¿no creen?

Ir a domir temprano: mi esposo siempre dice que todo lo hago en la noche. Generalmente me pongo a limpiar, cocinar, bloguear, lavar la ropa, recoger la casa o ver television tarde en la noche, por lo regular me voy a la cama cerca de las doce. Hace diez anos no me importaba mucho, pero ahora, después de dos hijos, cada día me siento mas y mas y mas cansada, no, diría exhausta! En el 2010 trataré de irme a la cama mas temprano, ¿quizá a las 10? pero espera, esta noche no puedo empezar porque necesito esperarme hasta la media noche para darle la bienvenida al 2010 y besar a mi esposo.

En cuanto a hacer ejercicio, ay caray! cada año pongo este propósito al principio de mi lista. Este año si me puse las pilas… por los primeros cuatro meses, no es excusa, pero empecé Mamá Latina Tips a finales de abril, y pues el tiempo que tenia destinado a mis ejercicios se lo he dedicado al blog. Ahora con mi propósito de irme a dormir mas temprano, estaré mas descansada, y tendré energía para hacer mis ejercicios y darme tiempo para el blog, ¿que tal? en un año mas les cuento como me fue, ¿sale?

Acerca de viajar. A nosotros nos encanta viajar, sin embargo como que las cosas no realmente funcionan tal como las deseamos. O tenemos dinero pero no tiempo, o viceversa, tenemos tiempo pero no dinero! Aunque no me puedo quejar, este año visite tres ciudades en las que nunca había estado antes. ¿Qué tal esta idea? hacer una especie de tradición, visitar al menos una ciudad al año que no conozcamos, me gusta. Pero por supuesto que entre mis planes de viaje siempre esta México en primer plano.

Organizar mi casa, ay, ay, ay, aquí si estoy en un predicamento, me pregunto si algún día tendré una casa ordenada, hay tantos papeles, tantas cosas, tantos juguetes tirados en el piso. Me la paso diciendo, “quizá cuando mis hijos crezcan mi casa se vera mas ordenada, quizá cuando tenga mas muebles mi casa se vera mas bonita, si tuviera una oficina mas grandes tendría menos pilas de papeles.... Sueños guajiros.

Como veo que son muchas cosas para hacer en la víspera del año nuevo, creo que no me voy a apegar a la tradición mexicana. Sólo me reuniré con mi familia, los besaré, abrazaré, daré gracias por todas las bendiciones que recibimos en el 2009 y comeremos nuestras 12 uvas, tal como lo hace mi familia en México.

Gracias a todos ustedes por haberme acompañado durante el 2009 y nos veremos en el 2010!

2010 is already upon us. We have no plans for how we are going to celebrate this year. If sticking strictly to the mexican tradition, on New Year’s Eve I will be doing everything I need or want to happen in 2010. Like going to bed earlier, exercising, traveling, and organizing my house. Uff! Sounds like a lot to do in one night.

As for going to bed earlier, my husband says I function better at night. Usually I start cleaning, cooking, blogging, washing clothes, picking up things, or watching television late at night, and usually I end up going to bed close to midnight. Of course 10 years ago, I wouldn’t have minded it, but now, after two kids, I’m becoming tired, tired, and more tired, probably a better word to use would be exhausted! Next year I will do my best to go to bed earlier, maybe 10? But wait, I can’t do that on New Year’s Eve, right? I need to wait to say hi to the new year and kiss my husband.

As for exercising more… hmmmmm! This one’s always at the top of my list. I did pretty well this year…for the first four months. Then I started my blog. I know, I know, it’s not a valid excuse, but really, blogging takes a lot of time, some of which I stole from my exercise routine. Next year I will put exercise at the top of my list again and I will let you know how it goes. Sound like a plan?

Traveling? We love to travel; yet I don’t know why things rarely work out the way we plan. We either have money and no time, or plenty of time and no money. I had a good year of traveling, though, visited three cities I’ve never been to before. Maybe I can set a goal to visit at least one new city each year, plus, I wouldn’t mind a trip to visit my family in Mexico.

As for having a more organized house, I wonder if I EVER will have an organized house, too many papers, too many things, too many toys on the floor. I keep saying when my kids grow up my house will look less crowded, when I have furniture it will look better, when I have a bigger office I will have fewer papers piled up… I think I’m dreaming.

See, too many things to do on New Year’s Eve. So I think I’m not going to try to keep to the mexican tradition of doing everything I need or want for the new year on New Year’s Eve. I think I will just gather my family, kiss them, hug them, give thanks for the blessings we’ve received in 2009 and eat our 12 grapes one at a time, like my family does in Mexico.

Mi Opinión

Tal como lo comenté en la reseña del libro “La Ultima Canción”. Soy una fiel admiradora de los libros de Nicholas Sparks. “Querido John” ofrece exactamente lo que espero en una novela de Sparks, una gran historia de amor, personajes interesantes, situaciones inesperadas y hermosas descripciones de los escenarios de Carolina del Norte. Y como siempre con los libros de Nicholas, este también me hizo llorar.

Savannah, la protagonista es una chica muy centrada, muy cariñosa, carismática y con un propósito muy claro en la vida, ayudar a los demás. Ella es voluntaria para la organizacion Habitat for Humanity y un proyecto la tendrá por algunos meses en una de las bellas playas de Carolina del Norte. Un acto de caballerosidad hace que Savannah y John se conozcan y experimenten una clase de amor que ninguno de los dos se imaginaban. No te voy a contar mas, tú tienes que leer el libro, y lo tienes que hacer antes de que la película sea estrenada en febrero, ok?

My Opinion

As I told you before, when I reviewed “The Last Song,” I am a big fan of Nicholas Sparks’ books. “Dear John” gave me exactly what I’m looking for in a novel by Sparks, a great love story, interesting characters, unexpected situations and beautiful descriptions of the North Carolina scenery. With this book I cried again, what can I say, I couldn’t help it.

Savannah is a great character, a very down to earth girl, loving, charismatic, with a clear purpose in her life. Working as a volunteer for habitat for humanity, she is spending the summer on one of North Carolina’s most beautiful beaches. An act of chivalry brings Savannah and John together and they experience a kind of love they never thought possible. I’m not saying anything else, you have to read the book and you have to do it before the movie releases in February, ok? The movie looks really good too, check out the trailer below.

Navidad es mi celebración favorita, trae las mejores memorias de mi niñez.  Mi familia, especialmente mi mamá, abuelita y tías siempre se han encargado de que la celebración sea muy espiritual y muy tradicional.  Yo crecí en una familia muy católica y todo en la celebración de la navidad se concentra en nuestra fe.  Por supuesto que también tenemos regalos y vamos de compras, pero las mujeres de la familia se aseguran de que la parte espiritual sea el centro de todo.  Yo crecí en este mundo, y me encanta.

Regularmente celebramos la última posada hoy 24 de Diciembre con lo tradicional, rezamos el rosario, pedimos posada, comemos nuestra fruta, bebemos nuestro ponche y quebramos la piñata.  Entonces esperamos hasta la media noche cuando todas las campanas de la ciudad empiezan a repicar anunciando el nacimiento del niño Jesús, a quien arruyamos, cantamos y besamos dándole la bienvenida. Después vienen los abrazos de felicitación.  Mas tarde nos sentamos a la mesa donde damos gracias por nuestra familia y por las bendiciones que recibimos durante el año y ¡a comer!, efectivamente, la cena de Navidad empieza alrededor de las 12:30 de la madrugada.  Finalmente nos sentamos todos alrededor del árbol a abrir los regalos, nos vamos a descansar, y regresamos al siguiente día al recalentado.
Los primeros 28 años de mi vida, celebré la navidad exactamente de la misma manera y con las mismas personas, añadiendo nuevos miembros a la familia en el camino.  ¡Y lo extraño!.  El año pasado tuve la fortuna de viajar a México con mis dos hijos en esta temporada y nos la pasamos super!.  Este año nos quedaremos en casa creando nuestras propias tradiciones.
Hay un par de tradiciones de las cuales aprendí cuando me mudé a USA y me gustan mucho:  Comprar un nuevo adorno navideño para el árbol cada año, representando algún evento significativo en la familia y mandar tarjetas de navidad hechas con la foto de la familia.  Me encanta que mis hijos están creciendo en un hogar multicultural y siempre trato de incorporar lo mas que puedo de nuestras dos familias.  Deseo que mis hijos recuerden la celebración de la navidad con el mismo amor que yo la recuerdo.
Hace un par de semanas el sacerdote del templo al que asistimos mencionó un par de cosas que ahora nosotros estamos añadiendo a nuestra celebración y que me gustaría compartir con ustedes.  Este año sólo pusimos en el nacimiento a los animales, el angel y el pastor… hasta el momento.  María y José harán su aparición hoy y el niño Jesús mañana.  Los tres reyes magos se van abriendo camino a través de los distintos cuartos de nuestra casa, ahorita están en el pasillo y poco a poco se van acercando, hasta el 5 de enero cuando los agregaremos para gozar de nuestro nacimiento completo.
La segunda sugerencia de nuestro sacerdote fue que cada día escogieramos algunas de las familias de nuestras tarjetas de navidad recibidas y oráramos por ellas.  Me encantó esta sugerencia y es parte de nuestra tradición navideña ahora.  Yo tengo todas mis tarjetas pegadas en las persianas del ventanal de mi cocina donde puedo ver a todas estas personas, familias y amigos, tan especiales para nosotros, y orar por ellos.
Porque para mi, la Navidad es compartir tanto amor como podamos y pedir el uno por el otro, no importa donde estemos, en California o en México.
¡Qué pases una muy Felíz Navidad!

Christmas is my favorite season, it brings great memories from childhood.  My family, specially my mom, grandmother, and aunts were sure to make our celebration spiritual and very traditional.  I come from a very Catholic Mexican family, everything about Christmas was focused on our faith.  Sure, we also had shopping and gifts, but the women of the family always made sure the spiritual part took center stage.  I grew up with this tradition and I loved it.
Usually, on the last posada around 8:00 p.m. Christmas Eve, we pray the rosary, we sing the posada’s verses, eat our fruit, drink our ponche, and break the piñata.  We wait until the bells of every church in town ring at midnight, then rock baby Jesus, sing, kiss the baby, give him hugs.  After that we gather around the table, give thanks for our family and for the blessings we’ve received through the year and we eat, yes, that’s right, we start eating around 12:30 a.m.  Finally we all sit around the Christmas tree to open gifts.  Then, everyone goes home and comes back around noon on Christmas day to eat leftovers. We enjoy our time together and probably watch a Christmas movie.
For 28 years, I celebrated Christmas in the same way and with the same special people, adding a new member of the family now and then.  I miss it very much.  Last year I had the good fortune of taking my two boys during this very special time to Mexico and we had a blast.  This year we are staying home creating our own traditions.
There are a couple of traditions I’ve learned since moving here and I like them:  Getting a Christmas ornament every year and sending Christmas cards with family pictures.  I love that my children are growing up in a multicultural home and I’m trying to incorporate as much as I can from both our families and I would like my boys to remember Christmas as a very special time as I do from my childhood.
A couple of weeks ago our priest mentioned a couple of things we are incorporating in our celebration and I wanted to share them with you.  This year we are setting up our nativity with just the animals, angel and a shepherd.  We will add Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus on Christmas Day, the three wise man are making their way around our house, getting closer every week, until El Dia de Reyes on January 5th, when we will add them to the complete nativity.
The second suggestion from our priest was to every day choose a few Christmas cards we have received and pray for the families who sent them.  I love this idea and it is part of our tradition now. I have all my cards displayed on our dinning room window shades so I can see every one of our family and friends and have them in my prayers.
Because for me, Christmas is about spreading the love and praying for each other, whether here or in Mexico.Have a Merry Christmas!

Me gustaría compartir con ustedes algo sobre moda y algo sobre belleza.

Sobre moda: Hace un par de semanas me enteré de KC Tees, una compañía en Los Angeles que vende blusas con diseños inspirados en Latinas.  Algunos de los mensajes que puedes ver en estas blusas son Amor (Love), Fuerte (Strong), Orgullosa (Proud), Paz (Peace), Unidad (Unity) o Fe (Faith), tanto en español, como en inglés.

Estas blusas son tan lindas que no me sorprende que celebridades como Jennifer Lopez, Eva Longoria, Eva Mendez, Ashley Tisdale, Paula Abdul, Winona Judd y Shakira, entre las hayan usado. AAA estima que más de 30 millones de personas manejaron en sólo el fin de semana de Día de Gracias y este es sólo el inicio de esta temporada de viajes. La Administración Nacional de Seguridad en las Carreteras (NHTSA por sus siglas in Inglés) del Departamento de Transportes de Los Estados Unidos y el Ad Council (El Consejo de Anuncios Públicos) han proporcionado información referente a la seguridad para los niños en los autos, donde puedes acudir y checar como colocar las sillas de los niños apropiadamente. En base a un estudio realizado por la NHTSA 3 de 4 niños no estan lo suficientemente seguros en el auto debido a una incorrecta instalación de la silla. With the holiday season moving into full swing, families across the country are in the car and on the go. Whether you are driving across the country to visit family or across town for holiday shopping, it is important your children are riding safely and child safety seats are used correctly.

The AAA estimates that 30 million people traveled the last Thanksgiving holiday alone, and for many, this is just the beginning of the holiday hustle and bustle. According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) study, 3 out of 4 kids are not as secure in the car as they should be because their car seats are not being used correctly. Hace dos semanas, agarré a mis hijos y manejé hasta Los Angeles para tomar café, bueno, el café fue para mí, y a mis hijos me los lleve a pasear! Tuvimos la oportunidad de participar en un evento de Got Milk? (Toma Leche) con la carismática Heather Perry, quien es una galardonada barista (persona que crea bebidas de café), y Directora de Capacitación y Consultoría en el negocio de su familia, Coffee Klatch.

Nos la pasamos súper bien, me encontré con algunas amigas blogueras de LA y conocí en persona a unas cuantas más, recibí, un relajante masage de manos de 15 minutos, comí muchos bocadillos, y por supuesto tomé deliciosos cafés con leche (lattes), preparados por Heather. Mis hijos se divirtieron muchísimo también, hicieron varias manualidades y se dejaron pintar sus caritas mientras tomaban chocolate caliente. Gracias Got Milk? por organizar eventos donde nuestros hijos son bienvenidos, definitivamente eso me facilita mucho más el poder asistir.

Y como me gusta ser compartida ahí les va la receta del Café tres leches, y al final del artículo pueden ver un video donde Heather nos muestra como hacerlo (en inglés).

8 oz (1 taza) leche
2 cucharadas soperas de leche condensada
2 oz café espresso o café cargado recién preparado
4 oz de crema batida
2 cucharaditas de azúcar glass
cereza para decorar

Bate la crema con el azúcar hasta que se formen picos firmes, puedes ver mi receta aquí. En una taza combina el café y la leche condensada. Agrega la leche caliente. Decora con la crema batida y la cereza, ¡que lo disfrutes!

A couple of weeks ago, I took my two children on a drive to Los Angeles to drink coffee, well, the coffee was for me, but, yes, we all went! The night was great. I got to meet some of my blogger friends from LA, luxuriated in a 15 minute hand massage, ate very yummy sweets, and, of course, drank very tasty lattes (or cafe con leche, as we call them in Mexico, of course, my husband always laughs at me because he says I drink milk with coffee ) My children had a blast, too. Thanks to “Got Milk?” for opening the event to children, it makes our participation so much easier. The kids made holiday cards and got their faces painted while drinking peppermint hot chocolate, yummmm!

I have a treat for you, too, here is the recipe for tres leches latte. You can also see the video where Heather explains how to make it. Enjoy!

8 oz. milk
2 tbsp. sweetened condensed milk
2 oz. fresh espresso or strong brewed coffee
4 oz. heavy whipping cream
2 tbs. powdered sugar
maraschino cherry

Combine whipping cream and powdered sugar, whip until stiff peaks form (my recipe here). In a mug, combine freshly brewed espresso and condensed milk. Steam milk and pour on espresso. Top with a scoop of fresh whipped cream and a maraschino cherry.

Este año estoy muy contenta porque por primera vez encontré todos los ingredientes para hacer el ponche de navidad. Mi mamá y mi tía Ana siempre me dicen “un ponche sin tecojotes y sin guayabas, no es ponche”, y tienen razón, el sabor cambia mucho sin ellos. Hace un mes fui a comprar mis tortillas a mi mercado mexicano favorito y me alegró mucho ver varios congeladores llenos de guayabas y tejocotes, asi que ni tarda ni perezosa tome un par de bolsas y las deposité en mi congelador. Hasta ayer, cuando las saqué para preparar el ponche. Me salió bien rico, tal como el que hacen en México, les comparto la receta.

Ponche Navideño

3 manzanas cortadas en pedazos
5-6 guayabas
12 tecojotes
1 taza de pasas
1 raja de canela
2 piloncillos (para los que no saben que es, es azúcar en roca en forma de cono, tal como se ve en la foto, si no lo encuentras utiliza azúcar a tu gusto)
1 caña en piezas
3 litros de agua (3/4 galon)
250 gr tamarindo (1/2 libra) opcional. Yo no usé tamarindo esta ocasion.

Revuelve todos los ingredientes en una olla grande, déjalos hervir por cinco minutos. Baja a fuego bajo y cócelos por otros 10-15 minutos. Apaga el fuego y déjalo reposar por media hora, eso es todo. ¡Qué lo disfrutes!

I’m very happy because for the first time in eight years I’ve found every ingredient to prepare my traditional “Ponche Navideno,” a delicious drink from Mexico made with fruit, cinnamon and sugar. My mom and Tia Ana always say, “A ponche without tecojotes and guayabas is not ponche,” and they are right. A month ago I went to buy some tortillas at my favorite mexican market and I saw these big freezers full of bags of guavas and tecojotes, and I got a couple. Yesterday I made it and it tasted just like the traditional Ponche mexicano from my home. So I thought I would share the recipe.

Ponche Navideno

3 apples in pieces
5-6 guavas
12 tecojotes
1 cup of raisins
1 cinnamon stick
2 piloncillos (this is sugar in rock shaped like a cone, like in the picture, if you can’t find it, use sugar to taste)
1 sugar cane in pieces
3 liters of water (3/4 gallon)
250 gr tamarindo (1/2 pound) optional. I didn’t use tamarindo this time

Mix all the ingredients in a big pot, bring the water to boil. Let it boil for 5 minutes on high heat. Simmer for 10-15 more minutes. Let it rest for half an hour. That’s it. Enjoy and Happy Holidays!

My Opinion

Jacqueline Leo regales us with everything we need to know about the number seven. Seven is perfection, at least that is what I have always heard. Seven is the lucky number. Seven just sounds right. How many expressions about seven have you heard in your life?

“7” touches on every area of our lives through siete chapters titled; simplicity, happiness, love, learning, winning, life, and wonder. She showers us with fun facts, data, celebrities’ stories, pictures, puzzles, even recipes, like Seven-layered Cake!

Do you know that it takes seven rounds of shuffling to obtain a fully mixed deck of cards? Or that out of hundreds of recipes in a cookbook, people return to the same seven over and over? I didn’t. You will find facts like these and much more in this fun book. I enjoyed knowing more about, well, seven! Now I understand a little more why I’ve always thought 7 was my lucky number, yes?! We love raisins!! My children love them as a snack, my husband loves to add them to his cereal, and I love to add them to my salads. Raisins give a sweet touch to a variety of dishes while providing healthy antioxidants.

Se desarrolla en la bella ciudad de Nueva Orleans y es musicalizada por el aclamado compositor y ganador del Oscar, Randy Newman, quien ha compuesto la música de bellas películas como “Toy Story”, Monsters, Inc.” y Bug’s Life entre otras.

La historia no es exactamente tal como la conocemos, mi hijo estaba junto a mi cuando estaba viendo el corto y me dijo “yo conozco esta historia” y le dije “¿si?, ¿de que se trata?” y el me contesto: “de una princesa que le da un beso al sapo y el sapo se convierte en un principe” y yo le dije, “que lindo mi amor, pero creo que en esta película no pasa exactamente eso precisamente” el abrió sus ojos grandes y me dijo muy sorprendido “¿no?” Pero después de ver el corto me sonrió y en sus ojos vi que el entendió porque se lo dije pero no te lo digo para que lo veas y te enteres por ti misma.

La temporada navideña es siempre una bella época para pasar en familia, y que mejor que irse al cine y disfrutar de esta linda película. Siguiendo la tradición de las películas pasadas de Disney seguro será del deleite para todos.

Get ready to take your family to the theaters this holiday season! December 11th is the national release in the United States of “The Princess and the Frog.” Number 95 in the list of Disney classic movies and, following the Disney tradition, I’m sure it will be a treat for the whole family.

This movie marks Disney’s return to its traditional 2-D hand-drawn animated musical, reminiscent of classics like “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Lion King,” and “Aladdin.” This is a fairy tale centered in the City of New Orleans with music by Oscar winning composer Randy Newman ("Toy Story,” “Monsters Inc.,” “Bug’s Life,” among others).

But the story is not exactly as we may remember it. My son was next to me when I started watching the trailer and he said, “Mama, I know this story!” and I said, “Yes? What is it about?” and he responded, “...about a princess who kisses a frog and the frog becomes a prince.” I said “that’s very sweet honey, but I think this story is a little different.” He opened his big eyes wide and, a little confused, said, “Really?” Then we watched the trailer together and at the end he had a big smile on his face and I could see he understood. But I’m not telling you, watch for yourself. Enjoy!

When René learns that in the United States his name is also a girl’s name, he does some research and relates the name’s meaning and letters to his homeland of El Salvador and the things that make him special.

Usando las caras y palabras del juego de la lotería, un niño practica su español cuando visita a su abuelita en San Luis de la Paz, México. Los dos se la pasan muy bien, el niño le enseña un poco de inglés a su abuela mientras ella le enseña español a él.

A little boy visits his grandmother in México, and with the help of la lotería, learns a new language and how special the bond between a boy and his grandmother can be.

René Tiene Dos Apellidos / René Has Two Last Names

René nació en El Salvador y no entiende porque en Los Estados Unidos su nombre tiene que ser diferente. Cuando el escribe Colato, el ve a sus abuelos paternos. Cuando escribe Laínez, él a sus abuelos maternos. Sin su segundo apellido Rene se siente incompleto, “como una hamburguesa sin carne o una pizza sin queso o un perro caliente sin salchicha.”

Young René is from El Salvador, and he doesn’t understand why his name has to be different in the United States. When he writes Colato, he sees his paternal grandparents. When he writes Laínez, he sees his maternal grandparents. Without his second last name, René feels incomplete, “like a hamburger without the meat or a pizza without the cheese or a hot dog without a wiener.”

Conoce un poco mejor a René: / Know a little more about René:

SMM: ¿Cuántos años tenías cuando empezaste a escribir y qué fue lo que te hizo comenzar?
RCL: Comencé a escribir mis primeros poemas cuando tenia siete años. Había un concurso de escritura en una revista y decidí participar. Nunca escuché ninguna respuesta pero encontré mi poema meses después en la revista. El poema no tenia mi nombre.

Cuando me convertí en maestro a la edad de 23 años, descubrí muchos maravillosos libros infantiles en el salón de clase. Me enamoré de las ilustraciones y de las historias. Pronto estaba escribiendo mis propios libros para mi salón de clase. Años después las autoras Alma Flor Ada, F. Isabel Campoy y Amada Irma Pérez leyeron mis libros y me apoyaron a que mandara mis cuentos a las editoriales.

SMM: How old were you when you started writing and what made you start?
RCL: I started writing my first poems when I was around seven years old. There was a writing contest in one magazine and I decided to participate. I never heard anything from them but months later I found my poem in the magazine. My name was missing.

When I became a teacher at the age of 23, I discovered many wonderful picture books in the classroom. I loved the art and the great stories. Soon, I was writing and illustrating my own classroom books. Many years later, authors Alma Flor Ada, F. Isabel Campoy and Amada Irma Pérez read my classroom books and encouraged me to submit my work.

SMM: ¿Cuál es tu libro favorito y porqué?
RCL: Don Quijote de la Mancha de Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra es mi libro favorito. Leí este libro cuando tenia ocho años. Me encantan las aventuras de Don Quijote. Este libro demuestra a niños de todas las edades que no hay fronteras para la imaginación.

SMM: What is your favorite book and why?
RCL: Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra is my favorite book. I read this book when I was 8 years old. I love Don Quixote and all his adventures. This wonderful book shows children of all ages that there are no borders for the imagination.

SMM: ¿Cuál fue tu experiencia al crecer como un joven bilingüe?
RCL: Yo crecí hablando español en El Salvador. Estudié mi escuela primaria y secundaria en mi país. Vine a los Estados Unidos cuando tenia 14 años. Fui a la escuela secundaria por un mes y luego me trasladaron a la preparatoria. En pocos años estaba escribiendo y leyendo en inglés.

Ser bilingüe es sensacional porque puedes leer libros en dos idiomas, celebrar diferentes días festivos, escuchar y cantar música maravillosa de dos culturas y tienes mas oportunidades en la sociedad. Ser bilingüe vale por dos.

SM: What was your experience growing as a bilingual boy?
RCL: I grew up speaking Spanish in El Salvador. I did my elementary and junior high school there. I came to the USA at the age of 14. I went to a junior high school for a month and then I was transferred to high school. In a few years, I was reading and writing in English.

Being bilingual is great because you can read books in two languages, celebrate different holidays, listen and sing wonderful music of two cultures and you have more opportunities in our society. You are worth double.

SMM: ¿Nos podrías contar el comentario favorito que hayas recibido de algún niño o niña después de leer uno de tus libros?
RCL: Una niña me dijo, -A mi no me gustaba hablar en español pero después que leí su libro “El Juego de la Lotería”, cambié de opinión. Ahora hablo español. !Gracias!

SMM: Please tell us the favorite comment you have ever received from a child after reading one of your books.
RCL: A young girl told me, “I did not like to speak Spanish but after reading your book, “Playing Lotería,” I changed my mind. Now hablo español. ¡Gracias!”

SMM: Por favor coméntanos algo que te gusta hacer además de escribir libros
RCL: Me encanta viajar. He estado en Sur América, Europa, África y Asia. He escalado la Gran Muralla China, visitado Machu Pichu y escuchado las Cataratas del Iguazú. Egipto y Grecia son dos países que quisiera visitar en el futuro.

SMM: Please tell us something you enjoy doing besides writing
RCL: I love to travel. I have been in South America, Europe, Africa and Asia. I have climbed the Great Wall, seen Machu Pichu and listened to Igazu Falls. Egypt and Greece are two countries that I would like to visit in the future.

Tengo algo que confesar, mi bebé cumplirá dos años en algunos días y hasta hace tres semanas atrás todavía usaba el biberón. Recuerdo que a mi hijo mayor le quité el biberón un poquito después de que cumpliera un año, y para el año y medio él ya tomaba todo en su taza. Bueno, pues hay cosas que por alguna razón no hice con mi segundo y esta es una de ellas, así que ahí me tienen tratando de encontrar una taza que le guste para tomarse la leche, sin mucho éxito que digamos. Si le daba la leche en taza, nada más le daba un par de tragos y la dejaba por ahí, y no se la tomaba hasta que la cambiaba al biberón. Finalmente, se me ocurrió una idea, hace algunas semanas recibí un par de tazas entrenadoras para probarlas y aunque hemos estado usando la taza grande de acero inoxidable para el agua de mi hijo, la otra, etapa 1, la guardé pensando que mi hijo era muy grande para usarla. Así que fui a mi gabinete, tome la linda taza azul con amarillo, la lavé, le puse la leche y mi niño la probó y se la tomó de un trago! finalmente caí en la cuenta que todo tenía que ver con la suavidad de la boquilla de la taza, la cual es tan suave como la mamila del biberón, como no lo pensé antes, ¡caray! me hubiera ahorrado algunos dolores de cabeza. Estoy fascinada con Thermos Foogo Phases, que es la línea de tazas que estoy usando.

Hay varias cosas que me gustan de estas tazas, primero que nada que no tienen PBA por lo que puedo dejar que mis hijos tomen sus bebidas sin temor de que este químico tóxico entre a sus cuerpecitos; segundo, las tazas de acero inoxidable realmente mantienen los líquidos fríos por mucho tiempo mientras que la taza de plástico Tritan™ me permite ver cuanta leche my hijo ha tomado; tercero, las tres tazas de la línea fogos tienen tapas intercambiables, asi que tienes la taza de la fase uno, con la boquilla suave; la taza fase dos, con la boquilla rígida; y el vaso de la fase tres con popote, pero puedes usar cualquiera de las tapas con cualquiera de las tazas. Además la taza fase uno viene con asas para que el niño pueda agarrarla de una manera segura, y estas asas se pueden poner o quitar o cambiar de taza también. Finalmente, se pueden comprar las tapas en forma separada, lo cual me encanta porque me la paso perdiendo tapas y pienso usar estas tazas por algún tiempo

Así que no hay mas biberones en esta casa, yupi!!. Mi próximo proyecto...deshacerme del chupón… ay, ay, ay, deséenme suerte!

I have to confess, my toddler, who will be two years old in a few days, was still drinking his milk from a bottle three weeks ago. I remember with my first born I was very careful not to use the bottle more than a few weeks after he turned one! Well, there are a lot of things I didn’t do with my second son, and this is one of them. I’ve been using different sippy cups, trying to find the one he would like. But every time he just took a couple of sips and waited for me to transfer the milk to a bottle, aughhhh! Finally an idea came to my head, a few weeks ago, I had received a couple of sippy cups from Thermos Foogo to try out, and while we had been using the big one, phase 2, for his water, I had put the phase 1 away, thinking my son was too big for it. Well, I was wrong! I took this very cute blue and yellow sippy cup, poured the milk in it and my son drank his milk like a champ, I couldn’t believe it! Why did he take this cup without a whimper? I’m sure it must have to do with the soft spout which has a similar feel to the bottle’s nipple, go figure! Something so simple and I hadn’t thought of it before!

So I’m very happy I had the opportunity to try these great sippy cups which are part of the Thermos Foogo Phases

I like the stainless steel cups because they keep the beverages cold for a long time, while the sippy cups, made of PBA free, Tritan™ plastic, allow me to see how much milk my son has drunk. Another great feature are the lids which fit interchangeably on each of the three cups, phase one with soft spout, phase two with hard spout, and phase three with a straw, so I can make multiple combinations. In addition, I can buy the lids separately which is great, because I lose lids all the time . Finally the phase one sippy’s handles are removable, so I can put them to use with other cups too.

So, no more bottles in this house, yeah!! next project… get rid of the pacifier… wish me luck!

A few days ago I had the opportunity to watch a conference about Shopping Safety and I would like to share what I learned with you in case you are getting ready to hit the online stores.

* Information provided by Scott Silverman of the National Retail Federation and Shop.org & Beth Jordan of AVG.

* Be sure to shop at reputable, trustworthy sites such as CyberMonday.com and its retail partners.
* Just as you are more careful when shopping in busy malls during the holidays, be more careful online as well.
* Stay current on security software, make sure you have the latest virus protection software updates from your provider before you start your holiday shopping. AVG offers free downloads of virus scan and link scan HERE.
* Think before you link: employ a URL scanning tool to ensure you are not clicking on links that lead to infected websites. Free tool HERE.
* Look for the “S” for security: Make sure the sites you are shopping on are secure and have “HTTPS:” in the URL when you are ready to pay. The “S” helps ensure security. Also, look for the padlock symbol.
* You may research shopping sites at locations such as shopzilla and pricegrabber.
* Keep your private information private. Create a separate e-mail account just for shopping and use a unique password. Keep records of your online shopping by printing confirmation pages and e-mail confirmations.
* Mix up your passwords. Each email, bank, credit card account should have a unique password. Write them down and store them in a secure location.

Hoy es Día de Gracias en Los Estados Unidos y antes de ir a reunirme con nuestra familia, quisiera decirles por quienes daré hoy:

Por mi Dios, que me ama, me apoya y me da todo lo que necesito.

Por mi esposo quien se enamoró de mi al verme picar una cebolla en mi mano Quien dejó todo y se fue para México porque su corazón le dijo que me encontraría allá. Quien me dice lo hermosa que soy aún en las mañanas cuando mi cabello es un caos y necesito lavarme los dientes. Quien trabaja muy duro todos los días para darnos a nuestros hijos y a mí lo que necesitamos. Quien es muy buen hijo, excelente hermano, amigo leal y un esposo increíble. Quien es una de las personas más inteligentes y simpáticas que haya conocido. Quien me ayuda todos los días a tener la casa en orden. Quien es mi compañero ideal educando a nuestros hijos. Quien dice siempre “Sí” aún, cuando es la milésima vez que nuestros hijos dicen, “¡vamos a jugar!”. En tres palabras un hombre íntegro.

Por mis hijos quienes me han enseñado el verdadero significado del amor incondicional, quienes llenan nuestro hogar de alegría y carcajadas, quienes me hacen levantar a las 6:30 de la mañana todos los días, aunque nunca ha sido tempranera. Quienes me hacen sonreir con una simple palabra, quienes me ayudan a practicar mi paciencia y el control de mí misma. Quienes me aman con todo su corazón, moriría por ellos.

Por mi familia, la mayoría de ellos viviendo en México, quienes me enseñaron lo que sé y me educaron de la manera que soy, quienes me apoyan en cada decision que tomo, quienes aman a mis hijos como si fueran suyos, quienes cambian sus actividades cuando vamos de visita para poder pasar el mayor tiempo juntos.

Por mi familia política quienes me han acogido como otra hija, hermana, o prima. Quienes ríen conmigo cuando aprendo cosas nuevas de este hermoso país en el que ahora vivo. Quienes me aceptan tal y como soy y disfrutan mis tradiciones mexicanas, mi comida y ¡mis pachangas!

Mis amigos, quienes son mi segunda familia, mi apoyo, mi alegría.

Y por todos mis seres queridos que ya no estan entre nosotros en esta tierra, porque se que desde el cielo nos cuidan y protegen siempre.

It’s Thanksgiving Day, so I think it is appropriate to tell what I’m grateful for:

My God who loves me, supports me and gives me everything I need.

My husband who fell in love with me when he saw the way I chop onions, (if you want to know how, send me an email to ask me), who went all the way down to Mexico because he knew in his heart he would find me there, who tells me I’m beautiful even in the mornings when my hair is all messed up and I need to brush my teeth, who works hard every day to give my children and me what we need, who is a good son, a great brother, a loyal friend, and an amazing husband, who is one of the smartest and funniest persons I’ve ever known, who helps me every day to keep our home in order, who is a great partner raising our children, who can say “yes” to our children even when it is the 1,000th time they have said, “let’s play!”, who is in a few words a great man.

My children who have shown me what unconditional love really means, who fill our home with laughter and joy, who make me get up at 6:30 every morning even though I’m NOT a morning person, who can make me smile just with a silly word, who help me to practice my patience and self control, who love me with all their hearts. I would die for them.

My family, most of them in Mexico, who taught me what I know, who raised me the way I am, who support me in every decision I make, who love my children as if they were their own, who change their schedules when we visit so they can be with us most of the time.

My in-laws who treat me like I was another daughter, sister, and cousin, who laugh with me when I am learning everything I need to learn in this beautiful new country. Who accept and embrace my Latina traditions, food, and way to party!

My friends who are my second family, my support, my joy.

And for all of my dear ones who are not among us on this earth because I know they are looking over me and my family always.

Leer, cantar y bailar son tres de las actividades favoritas de mis chiquitos. Y como familia bilingüe que somos, siempre estoy buscando la manera de introducir mas español en nuestra vida diaria. Me alegra mucho ver que hoy en día hay más opciones en el mercado que me ayudan con esta tarea. Aplaudo y agradezco enormemente a quien se dedica a crear productos de calidad para niños, y más si son en español. Y es por esto que me siento muy contenta de darles a conocer “El baile del sombrero”.

“El baile del sombrero” es una delicia a los oidos tanto de pequeños como de adultos. Las canciones son interpretadas por sus creadores Fati y Charles, con un toque de candor en las voces de sus hijos. “El baile del sombrero” está lleno de color, de ritmo y de amor. ¿En que otro CD puedes escuchar sobre las estaciones del año a ritmo de jazz brasileño, o la historia de una flor a ritmo de tango, o darles cinco minutos a los niños para ir dormir a ritmo de cumbia, o sobre Paco el muñeco de trapo a ritmo de salsa? y por supuesto sin olvidar, el baile del sombrero a ritmo, ¿adivinan de que? ¡pues de mariachi!

Es difícil decir cual es mi canción favorita porque este es uno de los CD para niños que puedo escuchar y escuchar y escuchar sin cansarme pero quiero decir que la canción Somos Dos toca una fibra muy sensible dentro de mi, porque habla de los sentimientos del hijo mayor cuando un nuevo bebé llega a la casa. Mi esposo no puede resistir tamborilear sus dedos en el volante cada vez que lo escuchamos en el auto, y mis hijos por supuesto saltan y bailan con casi todas las canciones, pero especialmente con Paco, mi muñeco de trapo, primero porque ellos tienen un perro de peluche que se llama Paco y segundo porque es a ritmo de salsa y honestamente, ¿quién puede resistirse al ritmo de salsa?

I’m always looking to introduce Spanish into my children’s daily lives. So I’m glad as each day passes, there are more and more choices to help me. I’m especially thankful to people who create fun, quality products for children in Spanish and that’s why I’m so pleased to tell you about the music CD, “El Baile del Sombrero.” Two of my children’s favorite activities are singing and dancing and this CD stimulates both.

First, and believe me this is important, “El Baile del Sombrero” delights the ears of both children and parents. Creators Fati and Charles perform all the songs and you can even hear the sweet voices of their children on some of the tracks. “El Baile del Sombrero” is fun, colorful, loving, and rhythmically diverse. There are songs about the seasons of the year in brazilian jazz, about a flower in tango, about giving a five minutes warning before the children go to bed in cumbia, about Paco, a rag doll, in salsa, and about a hat in the music of mariachi.

It’s hard for me to choose just one favorite song, I can listen to them all over and over and over again, but if I were forced to choose, I especially like “Somos dos (Now we are two)”, because it touches my heart and talks about the feelings of an older child when a new baby comes home.

My husband beats the rhythms on the steering wheel in the car and my kids dance along with the songs, particularily with “Paco, mi muñeco de trapo”, first because they have a dog doll called Paco and second because it is a salsa, and honestly, who can resist salsa?

Fati and Charles have created a beautiful world for children, it doesn’t matter if you speak Spanish or not, the music will move you.

Si me preguntaran cuantos juguetes recuerdo de mi infancia, los podria contar con los dedos de mis manos. Vamos a ver: Lagrimitas Lily, una muñeca chiquita que me encantaba porque le salían lágrimas “de verdad” y le daba de comer y hacia pipí; una mini cocina; una Barbie; un par de patines; mi bicicleta verde; y una gran pelota anaranjada. Recuerdo una caja de madera enorme color blanco donde guardábamos los juguetes, pero no recuerdo más. Me pregunto porque sólo recuerdo algunos juguetes y porque recuerdo cosas tan específicas relacionados con ellos, como mi Barbie, honestamente no es la clase de Barbie que yo hubiera deseado, estaba vestida de vaquera con sombrero y botas blancas, pero era una Barbie al fin y al cabo. Mi cocinita era blanca, azul y roja y tenía muchos compartimientos y ollas y sartenes y una carita sonriente al frente, jugué con ella por horas y horas…

No se si los patines y bicicleta se consideran juguetes, pero yo viví las mejores tardes de mi niñez y preadolescencia sobre ruedas!! Después de la escuela, me ponía mis patines y me salía a la calle, me caí mas de una vez y en cemento, pero nunca me rompí un hueso.

Mi bicicleta era mi pasaporte a la libertad, mis primas, mis amigos de la cuadra y yo tomábamos nuestras bicicletas cada vez que teniamos una oportunidad. Yo jugué interminables tardes fuera de casa para sólo regresar a comer y a dormir. En ese entonces vivía en una ciudad no muy grande y era muy seguro andar por las calles, aunque ahora que lo pienso mejor, sigue siendo pequeña y segura.

Recuerdo que mi pelota anaranjada era enorme, casi de mi tamaño o al menos era como mis ojos de niña de 6 años la recuerdan. Me encantaba esa pelota. Me dió mucha alegría cuando mi papá me la compró. Un día, jugando con ella en la cocina, me resbalé y me lastimé mi muñeca y mi mamá me llevó a la sala de emergencias porque era domingo y me dolía mucho mi mano. Todavía recuerdo la bolita que se formó en mi muñeca, y el dolor y mi gran pelota anaranjada a un lado de mí.

Me pregunto cuales juguetes mis hijos recordarán cuando sean mayores. Mis hijos tienen más juguetes de los que yo tuve en toda mi niñez y aún así, ellos parecen entretenerse con las cosas mas sencillas, como pelotas, o burbujas de jabón, o globos, o una caja de cartón. Cuando veo esto, me doy cuenta que no se necesita de mucho para ser felíz.

If you ask me how many toys I remember from my childhood I can count them with my ten fingers. Let’s see: Lagrimitas Lily, a small doll I loved because she made real tears, I could feed her, and she would pee; a play kitchen; a Barbie; a pair of roller skates; a green bicycle; and a big orange ball. I do remember a big white box with all my toys in it, but I don’t remember the rest. I wonder why I remember the ones I do. I remember very specific things about them, like my Barbie, she was a cowgirl, not the one I would have chosen to be honest (she had a white hat and white boots), but she was a Barbie. The kitchen was white, blue, and red, and it came with lots of pots and pans and had a smiley face on the front. I played with it for hours.

I don’t know if you categorize bicycles and roller skates as toys, but I spent the best of my childhood afternoons on wheels! After school, I put on my skates and rolled! I fell often and on cement, but I never broke a bone.

My bicycle was my passport to freedom, my cousins, my friends from “la cuadra” and I would ride at every opportunity. I played outside all afternoon, coming back only to eat and go to bed. I lived in a very small city and it was pretty safe to be out and about. Now that I think of it, it’s still pretty safe after all these years.

My orange ball was huge to me, maybe it wasn’t that big after all, but I was 6. I loved that ball. I was very happy when my father bought it and I played with it a lot. One day it made me trip and I injured my wrist and my mom took me to the ER because it was Sunday and I was in a lot of pain. I still remember the little bump on my wrist, the pain, and my orange ball next to me.

I wonder which toys my children will remember. My children already have more toys than I had in all my childhood. Yet, they seem to entertain themselves with the simplest, like balls, or bubbles, a balloon, or a cardboard box. When I see that I realize we don’t need much to be happy.

Sometimes we eat dessert first, it’s not my idea, it’s my husband’s idea and my children seem to agree with him, of course. One of our favorites is ice cream. Who can resist an ice cream cone? We never!

Anteriormente he hablado del programa “Los Niños en su Casa” que se presenta en PBS, un programa dirigido a padres, abuelos y proveedores del cuidado de niños pequeños. Este es un programa que se produce tanto en Inglés como en Español y maneja muchos temas interesantes sobre niños. Deseo informarles que la semana que viene presentarán un programa especial, el cual abordará el tema de la responsabilidad que algunos abuelos tienen al criar a sus nietos, y ofrecerá ideas para ayudar a estos abuelos a brindar un futuro prometedor para su familia.

Si tú eres una abuela criando a tus nietos, o si sabes de alguien en esta situación, este es un programa que sería interesante ver. Se presentará el lunes 16 de noviembre y el jueves 19 de noviembre, por favor checa la página “Los Niños en su Casa”, para consultar la guía de programación local.

Estoy muy emocionada porque siempre a finales de año hay muy buenas películas en el cine, así que me estoy preparando. Una de las que está en mi lista es The Blind Side, una película familiar que narra la extraordinaria historia del jugador de futbol americano Michael Oher. Sandra Bullock es una de las protagonistas, y hasta ahora creo que no hay película que no haya visto de ella, ¡es sensacional!

Esta es la sinopsis: “Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron) es un adolescente que se las arregla sobreviviendo por su cuenta prácticamente en las calles, y es descubierto por Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock). Cuando Leigh Ann se entera que Michael es compañero de clases de su hija, insiste al joven - vestido con pantalones cortos y una camiseta en el crudo frío del invierno - a que salga de la intemperie y sin dudarlo un minuto lo invita a pasar la noche en su residencia. Lo que comienza como un gesto de solidaridad se convierte en algo mucho mas profundo, mientras Michael pasa a formar parate de la familia a pesar de las grandes diferencias entre ambas partes.

Esta enternecedora película se estrenará el próximo viernes 20 de Noviembre del 2009. Y además de Sandra Bullock la estelarizan Tim McGraw, Kathy Bates y por supuesto Quinton Aaron. Y como una imagen dice mas que mil palabras, puedes ver el corto a continuación.

Además tengo dos paquetes promocionales de la película para regalar, consisten en un mini-poster, camiseta y toalla de mano. I’m very happy because we are getting close to holiday season and with it some great movies in theaters. One of the movies on my list to see is “The Blind Side.” I’ve seen the trailer a few times and it seems a perfect movie to enjoy with family. Besides, Sandra Bullock is in it and I’m pretty sure I’ve seen almost all her movies, I think she is sensational!

The Blind Side is based on the true story of Michael Oher an All-American football star. Here is the synopsis:

“A homeless African-American youngster from a broken home, Oher (Quinton Aaron) is taken in by the Touhys, a well-to-do white family who helps him fulfill his potential on and off the football field. At the same time, Oher’s presence in the Touhys’ lives leads them to some insightful self-discoveries of their own.

Living in his new environment, the teen faces a completely different set of challenges to overcome. As a football player and student, Oher works hard and, with the help of his coaches and adopted family, becomes an All-American offensive left tackle.”

This inspirational family movie releases next Friday, November 20, 2009, and features Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw, Kathy Bates and of course Quinton Aaron. Here is the trailer, just watching it makes my eyes water:

¡Felíz cumpleaños número 40 de Plaza Sésamo!! Gracias por todos estos años de alegria, entretenimiento y aprendizaje. ¡Tengo tantas gratas memorias de mi infancia! todavía pone una sonrisa en mi cara cada vez que veo alguno de mis episodios favoritos. Y me da mucho gusto que ahora mis hijos tengan la oportunidad de disfrutar y aprender de este programa tan bonito, tanto en inglés como en español ¡Ojalá que cumplas muchos, pero muchos años más!

Happy 40th Birthday Sesame Street!! Thanks for all the years of entertainment, learning and joy. I have great memories of my childhood watching Plaza Sesamo, the Spanish version and I still smile every time I watch my favorites episodes. I’m glad such a sweet and educational program is still available for my kids to watch, enjoy, and learn and I’m happy they can watch it in English and in Spanish through V-me.

So here are some classic videos from Sesame Street for you and your kids to enjoy, and don’t forget to check the video in the Spanish version above called Ricas Frutas, it features one of my favorite singers, Aleks Syntek, and it has English subtitles.

Tengo algo para todas ustedes amantes de la cocina. General Mills a través de su página en español Que Rica Vida a lanzado el concurso “La Receta de mi Cocina”.

¿Tienes alguna receta que ha sido parte de tu familia por años? o ¿alguna versión personal de un clásico platillo latinoamericano? no tiene que ser nada complicado, puede ser un plato principal, postre o platillo para complementar. Ahora es tu oportunidad para compartirlo y posiblemente ganar un gran premio.

Lo único que tienes que hacer es publicar tu receta en la página “La Receta de mi Cocina”, la cual debe usar al menos una de las marcas de Que Rica Vida: Cheerios, Honey Nut Cheerios, Bisquick, Yoplait, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Green Giant, Hamburger Helper, Pillsbury Toaster Strudel, Nature Valley, Progresso, Tostino’s Pizza Rolls, Fiber One, GoGurt y Lucky Charms.

Tienes hasta el 31 de enero del 2010 para hacerlo; ¿y qué te puedes ganar? Se seleccionarán 3 finalistas principales y una de ellas será elegida como ganadora del Gran Premio por un panel de profesionales de las Cocinas Betty Crocker. Here is a fun contest for lovers of cooking! General Mills, through its Spanish webpage Que Rica Vida, has launched an online cooking contest “La Receta de mi Cocina” (My Kitchen’s Recipe).

Do you have a traditional recipe that has been in your family for years? Maybe you’ve created your own version of a favorite Latin American dish. The recipe doesn’t need to be time consuming and it can be a main dish, dessert, or side dish. Now is your opportunity to share it and maybe get a great prize.

You just need to publish your recipe on the page “La Receta de mi Cocina”, and you have to use at least one of these brands to make it: Cheerios, Honey Nut Cheerios, Bisquick, Yoplait, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Green Giant, Hamburger Helper, Pillsbury Toaster Strudel, Nature Valley, Progresso, Tostino’s Pizza Rolls, Fiber One, GoGurt, or Lucky Charms.

This contest will end on January 31st, 2010. Three grand finalists will be selected. SPANISH AND ENGLISH VERSIONS TOGETHER

Me encantó ver la cara de felicidad de mi hijo mayor cuando se puso su disfraz, quien por cierto lo eligió por primera vez en su corta edad (los años anteriores, YO decidí que sería como lo podrán ver en las fotos del año pasado que he puesto al final de este artículo). Este año él fue Optimus Prime, si tu tienes hijos hombres seguramente sabes de lo que estoy hablando, pero si no, Optimus Prime es el buenazo lider de los Transformers.

It was so much fun to see my five year old so excited! His face lighted up as he put on his costume, which he actually chose for the first time this year. He was Optimus Prime, if you have boys you probably know what I’m talking about, if not, Optimus Prime is the good leader of the Transformers.

Pero, si escogí el disfraz de mi otro hijo, lo vestí de San Juan Diego. Una amiga me lo dio de regalo hace algunos años cuando fui de visita a México, ¡gracias Vero!, y es la talla perfecta de mi pequeño. No le gustó mucho usar el sombrero....al principio, pero cuando se dio cuenta que se veia encantador con el vaya que lo usó a su favor, como lo confirmamos cuando al final de la noche el acabo con doble cantidad de dulces .  Fue muy gracioso ver como él quería su sombrero puesto cuando estaba enfrente de la puerta y mi otro hijo tocaba el timbre. Pero en el momento en que obtenía sus dulces, me regresaba el sombrero mientras caminabamos a la siguiente casa, cuando me lo pedía de nuevo, ¿que tal?

I chose my 22 month old’s costume, he went as St Juan Diego. A friend of mine gave it to me a few years ago and it was perfect for him. He wasn’t sure about wearing the hat, though, he kept taking it off until he discovered he had charm enough to get as much candy as he wanted as long as he had the whole outfit on. It was hilarious. He wanted the hat put on right in front of the door just before my older son said trick or treat! But as soon as he got his candy, he promptly gave it back to me, until we arrived at the next house. He got double the candy.

Y ahora que hago con todos estos dulces de Halloween! ¿podrían darme algunas ideas?

Now my problem is what to do with all the sweets in my house. What do you do with all the Halloween candy? I could use some tips.
