FOXBOROUGH - The first game of the NFL season is kind of like a piñata. You know there is going to be some type of candy inside the papier-maché punching bag, but you don’t know exactly what kind until it spills out on to the floor. In an NFL season opener, you know football players are going to play, but you don’t know how they’re going to perform and what it’s going to look like until the action unfolds on the field.Read More

Rangers walk over Wakefield, Sox
By Amalie Benjamin Boston Globe / September 7, 2008
ARLINGTON, Texas - Gregg Zaun had barely gotten his bat through the strike zone, the ball slamming off it and into the stands, before the entire visitors’ clubhouse exploded. Most of the Red Sox, arrayed on a set of couches in front of a big-screen TV, had been watching intently as Tampa Bay took the lead on Toronto, as the Blue Jays came back against Jays closer Troy Percival, as that home run soared out of the park.Read More

Pedroia gets hot at the right time
By Amalie Benjamin Globe Staff / September 5, 2008
ARLINGTON, Texas - Paul Byrd uttered the magic words this week. Not when he called Dustin Pedroia the MVP. No, it was when Byrd said, “As he goes, we go.” That, especially on a star-laden team like the Red Sox, is the mark of a valuable player.Read More
‘Sleepwalking’ Sox come alive in time to sweep Orioles
September 4, 2008 Boston Globe Alex Cora didn’t even peek. His focus was on third base, on getting there ahead of the throw from Jim Miller, on keeping himself primed to score the winning run in the ninth inning of yesterday’s game against the Orioles. There was no time to look. The ball didn’t matter, third base did.
Until, that is, the ball sailed wide right, past Aubrey Huff and into left field. That was when Cora took off again, this time for home. For the win.
With Jacoby Ellsbury dropping down the second straight bunt for the Red Sox, after Coco Crisp, Cora’s only task was to get to third. But Miller misfired for an error, and Cora trotted home as Boston won, 5-4, at Fenway Park. There was a standing ovation from the sellout crowd of 37,373, an outpouring of love from Cora’s teammates, and a victory reminiscent of last season’s Mother’s Day Miracle, also against the Orioles.Read More

A laugher at Fenway
By Nick Cafardo Boston Globe / September 3, 2008
The “MVP! MVP!” chants continue from adoring fans who are continually amazed that such a small player can generate so much power. Yet again last night, Dustin Pedroia, hitting cleanup after Kevin Youkilis was a late scratch with back spasms, thumped the baseball in a manner that would make Albert Pujols jealous. He had five more RBIs and hit his 16th homer. Could you ever imagine Pedroia hitting 20 home runs in a season?Read More
U.S. will play in Cuba for first time since 1947
By MICHELLE KAUFMAN, Miami Herald
It’s still very early in the 2010 World Cup qualifying process, but already the U.S. faces an intriguing match as it heads to Havana to play Cuba on Saturday. It’s the first time the U.S. national team will play on the island since 1947, although a U.S. under-20 team did play there in 1991 during the Pan American Games. The U.S. team is convening in Miami on Sunday, training Monday through Thursday at Barry University and then heading to Havana. Pedroia is spot-on again
By Amalie Benjamin Boston Globe / September 2, 2008
It clearly doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter if Dustin Pedroia hits second or fourth or first. Wherever he is in the batting order, he seems to produce. It might be hits or runs or RBIs. He is always, always, in the middle of the fray these days.Though it was Coco Crisp’s two-out single to center field that broke a tie in the sixth inning - what would become a decisive four-run sixth inning - it was Pedroia’s line single to right that provided the eventual winning run for the Sox, as they beat Baltimore, 7-4, last night at Fenway Park.Read More
Pedroia: Star has big backer
By Nick Cafardo Boston Globe September 1, 2008
Former Red Sox manager Joe Morgan once called Ozzie Guillen the “smartest player in the game.” And now, some 20 years later, Guillen is gushing over Boston’s little second baseman, Dustin Pedroia.
Though Guillen’s methods are a tad different than Walpole Joe’s, both tend to speak their minds and tell it like it is. There is no gray area about anything they do or say. Guillen is not above uttering something shocking to make his point. Read More

Red Sox have all the horses
By Michael Vega Boston Globe / August 31, 2008
The game seemed set up as a perfect opportunity for the Chicago White Sox to regain some lost footing in the American League Central. NEW YORK - The ball, blasted off the bat of Jason Giambi on a fastball from Hideki Okajima, cleared the center-field fence. With it went the stellar start by Jon Lester, the sweep of the Yankees, and the good feelings from a winning trip.Giambi’s two-run home run merely tied the game. NEW YORK - When Jonathan Papelbon raised his arms as he watched Dustin Pedroia’s grand slam soar into the netting above Monument Park, there was joy. There was excitement. And there was the knowledge that, in one swing of the second baseman’s bat, “that’s the nail in the coffin,” as the closer said.
